Interview with Jon Peasey

What is your e-reading device of choice?
My IPad Mini 2.
Describe your desk
My desk is a wooden desk with a hutch. The hutch houses different books and stationery items. It is not a neat and tidy desk as I tend to need things I am working on, on my desk. Out of sight out of mind can be a problem for me. My laptop usually sits on my desk plugged into power and the USB ports have peripherals such as my printer, mouse, additional hard drive and memory stick attached.
When did you first start writing?
I began to write the first draft of my eBook 'Iron In His Soul" back in the late 1980's. Due to a growing family and work pressures it went on the back burner for many years. Realising I needed guidance I enrolled at a TAFE Distance Education course in Brisbane Queensland. As I was living at Innisfail in Far North Queensland at the time, this was the only means available to me. I successfully completed a Non-Fiction course and also a Fiction course. In the 1990's I began to write articles for a Christian magazine based in the USA. This gave me the confidence to continue on with my "Iron In his Soul" manuscript. However it was the advent of eBooks that really spurred me on. This was a different learning curve and I am thankful to Smashwords for the opportunity to write and publish my growing list of eBooks.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
As a committed Christian I get satisfaction from passing on what I have learned through Bible study; whether it be in gospel messages or in devotional messages. I also enjoy writing up my travel memoirs which hopefully give people an insight into travel destinations they may not know about. Then there is the joy of writing my personal memoirs; passing on events and times of earlier years to my family and younger generations.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in Smithfield, Sydney, Australia where I spent the first 28 years of my life. I essentially grew up in what was then a rural outer western suburb of Sydney. As I went into my teenage years the suburb became urbanised as progress caught up with it. I learned to be self sufficient if required. As the eldest child I had the responsibility of looking after my sister and brother. My mother taught me from an early age how to do all the housework chores. My step father was a strict disciplinarian and not averse to using a leather strap for enforcement. He was a good tradesman and taught me basic woodwork skills; which has stood me in good stead over the years. I was good at English and History at school, so writing comes fairly easily to me. Even in my later work life I have always been someone who will find the easiest and best solution to a problem. If somebody else had a better method or procedure I was quick to adopt it to my situation. I am 'big picture' type of thinker so I usually look at the ramifications of new methods or procedures before blindly following them. I also like to get to the nitty gritty of matters. I like to know how things work. I don't always need to know the very fine details, but I do need to know the main premise and principles involved. As you will see from my writing I don't go off into flights of fancy. I like to keep it realistic and relevant.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Smashwords has enabled me to reach out to people all over the world. I began by 'dipping my toe in the water' with my novel "Port Robe'. Once I realised that the process was relatively easy, as long as I followed the Smashwords guidelines, more eBooks followed. Whilst downloads of my books have not been spectacular, they have been consistent which means people are enjoying them.
What are you working on next?
My next manuscript will be my personal memoirs of the 1970's decade. I am in the early stages of my research and jotting down my recollections of that era. This will be the third eBook in my personal memoirs collection. I have already published 'The 1950's - A Time To Grow' and 'The 1960's - Changing Times'. So keep a look out in 2017 for the next eBook in the series.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
I was a late starter. My first story as such was a short story titled 'Tonight My Love' which I wrote when I did writing courses at TAFE in the early 1990's. The story has never been published. I may revisit it some time and expand it from a short story into a novel. It is not a romance story it is a crime thriller.
What is your writing process?
My writing process begins with an idea, then some background research. I will then begin to work out in my mind the general frame work I want to pursue for the manuscript. As most of my writing is non-fiction the frame work is important to me. I then work out what information to include in possible chapter break downs. There is a great need to present my information in a lucid, coherent manner. I spend a lot of time on transitions, so the reader moves smoothly from one chapter to the next. The actual writing process often begins with pen and paper to jot down main points. From these notes I will consolidate or expand my writing as needed. I will then transcribe my initial writings on to my word processor. I will often revise on the fly. Once I am reasonably satisfied with a chapter I move on to the next. I spend a lot of time revising and polishing the manuscript. I will often leave the manuscript for several days and then revisit it again. It's amazing how many typos and grammatical errors you can pick up with fresh eyes!
What motivated you to become an indie author?
My son Andrew was the main instigator. He was the one who persuaded me to try out the eBook publishing industry. Having had rejections from traditional book publishers in the past, this seemed like an excellent way to get published. Mark Croker and his team at Smashwords have made the process achievable and efficient. (As long as you follow the guidelines!). The ease of the process certainly encouraged me to keep writing and keep publishing.
What do you read for pleasure?
I like to study the Bible and devotional books. I also read biographies and autobiographies. I prefer real life books to fiction. However, a well put together novel can be a good and satisfying read. As my wife and I like to go car touring on our holidays, we often buy travel magazines, caravanning and camping type magazines to enjoy on our trips.
How do you approach cover design?
I tend to do my own cover design. I begin by selecting what I consider to be an appropriate cover image. I often use my own photos for book covers. I use the Smashwords guidelines for image sizes. Cover design can take up a sizeable piece of time in trying to get the right image for each book.
What's the story behind your latest book?
Since 2002 I have kept a daily diary which has been an invaluable resource for my travel memoirs. My latest eBook titled 'North then South' is my recollections of a camping trip my wife and I did from Toowoomba Queensland (QLD) to the Atherton Tableland in Far North QLD. After this trip when we returned to Toowoomba we decided to revisit the southern State of Victoria (VIC). As it was the middle of winter in VIC we decided not to take the tent but use accommodation on this trip. Thus the name of the eBook 'North then South' became self evident. Using my diary notes as raw material I traced the daily journey and activities for each day of each trip. As you relive each day more memories keep cropping up to add to the story. I work on the premise that other folk will enjoy my travel memoirs and perhaps learn a bit about destinations they have not experienced.
