Interview with Jacey Ransom

What do your fans mean to you?
My fans are everything! They are easily half of the motivation for writing, the other half being my own need to get the story out. When I started out with my first book, Timebenders, I almost ran out of steam a few chapters in, but the readers' comments and reactions and suggestions kept me going until the story was done!
Who are your favorite authors?
I love Stephen King for his ability to paint a complete scene without being too verbose. He has a great talent at implying detail that I try to emulate.
For science, I'm a fan of the classics - Heinlein, Asimov - because they just feel more *real*. If you can understand how the science is plausible, and it's internally consistent, it makes the book that much more immersive. I spent a lot of time thinking, for example, about how Jake's power in Timebenders would work.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Oh my god. Okay, yeah. The first real story would be in second grade. Well, unless you count the Dick and Jane book I wrote when I was five. But the second grade assignment is my pride and joy.
The assignment was to color a picture and write a story for it. The picture was of some Care Bears in a cloud car descending toward a barn.
I had decided the Care Bears were dumb recently, but Mrs. Taylor insisted. The thing about me is, if you force me to do something, you won't like the result. I did as I was asked. I wrote a story about the Care Bears visiting a farm.
A worm farm.
The car landed in a vat of worms.
It was dark, and slimy, and cold. The worms were everywhere. In their eyes, their noses, their mouths.
they couldn't breathe.
My first story was a snuff piece. I killed the Care Bears.
It sort of went downhill from there.
What is your writing process?
I'll often think about something in my head a long time before I start actually writing it. I'll write and re-write a few scenes and a beginning on the toilet or while falling asleep... by the time I sit down to write, it pours out at dictation speed. Once I have a few pages in, the old IRC roleplaying instincts kick in and it just sort of writes itself for a while.
Eventually I take what I have written, see where it's going, and do a rough sort of jot-point plot map. But I try to write start-to-finish, even if I've already got a cool middle or end scene in my head. That way I have something to look forward to, like eating your favorite part of dinner last. Eat your vegetables, kids.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
My fans, really. I was posting Timebenders as a serial online, and about a hundred people were reading it I think. I joked in the comments that I was tempted to sell the thing and they told me to go for it.
I sat on the book for a while and started on Roma Revenge, but then I lost my job and after a few months of fruitless searching I finally bit the bullet and posted it, with some bonus chapters for buyer incentive.
As of now I've sold two copies. It's not much, but it feels amazing.
