Interview with Jackie Forster

What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
My children. My boy's are my inspiration for everything.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
With my children or reading. My boys are my life but books are my passion. I have spent many weekend mornings curled up in bed with a good book!
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
I find most of my books by browsing shelves, but more recently my eldest son has been making recommendations. I am always on the lookout for the next book to read and everyone I know gives me suggestions.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Cassy was they first story I completely finished. There were others before but nothing that really gripped me and screamed write!
What is your writing process?
I need quiet to write, so I usually wait for my boys to go to school then curl up with my laptop and a coffee. Anything that comes to mind gets written down. Once I have a start, usually a character, I build a plan from there. I map out where I want the story to go and any main points that need to happen. However most I the time I find myself surprised with the finished story.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
I cannot remember the first but there have been so many over the years. George Orwell's 1984 has stayed with me for many years, along with works by Stephen King and Virginia Andrews. Every book I read has some impact but each one inspires me to write better!
How do you approach cover design?
I ask my mother! No, I'm not joking. My mother is an artist and she usually paints my characters for me. I then use her paintings as a cover design. I have also used photographs by a friend. It depends on the book!
What are your five favorite books, and why?
The Dark Tower series, by Stephen King, because it's scary and funny and intriguing at the same time.
The Morganville vampires series by Rachel Caine because it's an easy read.
Anything by Stephen King, because he's my favourite writer.
The book I'm reading right now, because I'm enjoying it.
The book I will read next because I haven't read it yet!
What do you read for pleasure?
Anything and everything, but usually either Stephen King or young adult fiction.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I use the Kindle App on my phone. It makes it easier to read while I'm out and about.
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
So far, word of mouth. Marketing is something I am struggling with but everyday I learn something new and I hope to find something that woks well but I don't have to do too much. I want as much time as possible to spend on writing. If I wanted to work in marketing I would not have become a writer.
Describe your desk
Messy, organised Chaos.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in Cornwall, UK. The scenery there is always the first thing to come to mind when I am describing a place. I remember standing on the cliffs at Tintagel or walking on Bodmin moor. The old buildings and ruins always spark my imagination.
When did you first start writing?
I don't remember. Even as a child I wrote. I remember show a teacher at school some of my work and he encouraged me to continue. My first published piece, Cassy, I started in 2005 as a bedtime story for my eldest son.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I was turn away by ever literary agent I went to. It seems strange but with every rejection I became more determined that I would publish. I looked into vanity publishing but didn't like the idea. When I discovered I could publish my work myself I jumped at the chance.

Book of poetry. Many were written as songs and the tunes still bounce around in my head. Many were written as a way to express an emotion that I could never show, in this politically correct world. Whatever you read within these pages, whether you think them childish or naive, just know every word came from a place of truth that we all carry inside us.
