Interview with Jacob Palmer

Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in Wales and England and moved around a lot. I wouldn't call it an unsettled upbringing, but I have never considered anywhere home. I guess this added to my love of Beat literature, especially 'On The Road' by Jack Kerouac. I understood the restlessness of being in one place when there is a whole world out there to discover. I read through the complete works of Kerouac and devoured William S Burroughs and Allen Ginsberg. This progressed onto Hunter S. Thompson and eventually my kindred spirit - Charles Bukowski. My writing has often been likened to his, which comes with good points as well as bad. While trying to establish myself as a writer on my own merits, I can't help but be flattered by the likening to Buk.

I wouldn't say I am a genre reader especially. However, detective fiction is probably the closets I have come to being a fan of any genre. Raymond Chandler, Dashiell Hammett and James M Cain being three authors I have admired and respected.

As far as the erotica genre goes I am a bit fan of the Marquis De Sade, Leopold Ritter von Sacher-Masoch, Anais Nin and the classic erotica writers. Of today's markets I love the writings of Vanessa De Sade, Sidda Lee Rain and Lexie Bay. I am a serial erotica reader, I will read anything and everything.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I think the decision whether to become an indie or publisher author is a very complex issue. There are so many key factors to to consider and at the end of the day I believe it is all down to choice and preference rather one being better than the other. Things like promotion, how much profit you want to make, control, they are all factors that are dictated only by personal preference.

For me, I have decided to be indie as I tend to work quite quickly and am good at, as well as enjoy, being self-regulating. 'If you want something doing, do it yourself', that has become my motto, unfortunately, due to having relied on people and been let down on numerous occasions. I find it a lot easier to control all aspects of my work.
What are you working on next?
I have a list of projects and ideas I always keep. I was told by a tutor at college to keep an ideas book and when you have an idea, write it down immediately. Since then I have never gone anywhere without a notebook and pen. I keep it by my bed, I keep it in my laptop bag,it is always with me as you never know when inspiration will strike. I write it down there and then, I stop whatever I am doing and write it down, as I have learnt, you do tend to forget quite quickly!
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
I get up at 5am as I have so much to do everyday and I am so excited to be doing it. Yes, it is a hard slog to do that sex or seven days a week, especially in the winter, but each day is planned and split into sections, so if I lay in I run the risk of losing three sections of work that I am unable to catch up on later on in the day due to other sections in my routine.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
When I am not writing I am usually working on my classic rock covers band. I am bassist and I started up the band so I tend to do all the social media promotion side of things and learning new songs constantly. I also love football, I support Huddersfield Town which is a rollercoaster to say the least. I am well domesticated so I cook a lot, and I enjoy it!

Of course I read a lot too being an author!
