Interview with Jacob Parr

What's the story behind your latest book?
It is a sudden rash of bizarre killings that takes the Washington D.C. Metropolitan area by storm. It infuses a bit of the supernatural into the generic murder mystery tale and crafts a believable world where you never know if evil is solely a human characteristic.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
Hunter S. Thompson's 'The Rum Diary', Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child's 'Relic' and Michael Crichton's 'Jurassic Park" are just some of the books I read growing up that inspired me to want to write. Those along with the varied stories from H.P. Lovecraft, Edgar Allen Poe, Stephen King, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and many more modern and classical literature writers are who I find enjoyment in reading.
How do you approach cover design?
When designing the cover of my books, I try to aim for a simplistic approach so that it does not appear cluttered and is easily recognizable to readers.
What do you read for pleasure?
My interests run the gambit of all forms of writing. Mostly I find myself drawn to thrillers, horror, science fiction and mysteries.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
While I am a bit old-fashioned in liking to hold printed book with paper pages in my hand when reading, I do use my Kindle for eBooks.
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
Social networking with fellow writers online has been a tremendous help in marketing. I utilize Twitter, websites, book bloggers and more. That and people do like watching the book trailers.
Describe your desk
A desk...what is that? I tend to write from wherever in the house I happen to be at the moment. Sometimes it's on the bed, at a table or occasionally I have used a desk. Wherever I write though, I make sure I have my trusty notebook and laptop with me at all times.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up on the East Coast of the United States. However, most of my family is out in California so we would drive across the country every two years to visit them and I got to see the amazing wonders and sights our country has to offer and the vast differences in the various State's cultures and customs. It made me love traveling and I continue to learn new things everywhere I go as to further my writing and creativity.
When did you first start writing?
From the earliest days of my childhood I was always crafting stories and ideas and expressing them through words. I believe it was in first grade that I really began to enjoy crafting worlds and settings for different characters from my imagination, but I truly found my calling in high school to share my work with others through various creative writing classes where we were allowed to push the envelope and had the freedom to write what we wanted.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
After weighing all the pros and cons, I decided I wanted to freedom of control that being an indie author provided me in regards to ownership and decisions relating to my hard work.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Smashwords has been a great tool in helping to spread awareness to new readers and allow them to have access to my work through various vendors and in multiple electronic formats.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
My greatest joy comes from being able to share the tales that fill my imagination with others.
What do your fans mean to you?
My fans are everything to me! Without them, my ideas would probably never make it out to the public. It is from their encouragement and enjoyment in reading my fiction that I do what I do.
What are you working on next?
My next book is called Tragedy. Here is the synopsis... “Moonlit Nights” author Jacob Parr delivers his most harrowing novel yet as journalist Jenny Blake aids a man whose pregnant girlfriend was just horribly murdered, a man she knows nothing about, in the pursuit of his lover’s sadistic murderer. The problem is that the killings have just begun. The psychopath is on a mission to rid the city’s streets of those he considers inferior. For the working girls whose livelihood is centered on the streets of Baltimore, Maryland's Inner Harbor, work has never been so dangerous! A terribly wicked game has just begun at the hands of the serial killer who calls himself Tragedy.
