Interview with Jake Aaron

Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
In third grade, I used my two index fingers to pound out a detective play on an Underwood portable typewriter. I was also the lead actor, director, and costume designer. The unforgettable plot of the play escapes me. I do remember I wore a white jacket with bright red polka dots.
What is your writing process?
I start with a general idea. I decide what the ending should be. Then I methodically map out a detailed outline on how to get there. At that I point, I begin to write, and the story takes on a life of its own -- trashing the rigorous process I intended.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
One of the first stories I ever read concerned a remarkable group of people. For months I was troubled by the fact that I had never heard any other mention of such a heroic group. Eventually, my mother unraveled the mystery: the "SIGH-ox" people were the Sioux tribe.
How do you approach cover design?
My first impulse was to produce a lot of symbols that represent high points of the plot. A coach convinced me that less is more, so I am currently given to creating a mood that represents a significant portion of the book.
What do you read for pleasure?
I like mysteries and thrillers. Authors Jeffery Deaver, Brad Thor, Daniel Silva, and Vince Flynn immediately come to mind. And then there's John Grisham, who is a genre unto himself.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
There is a lot of ongoing pleasure in being able to create. Molding the plot gives one a great sense of power. I was surprised how real the characters became to me. After they were outlined, they seemed to have a will of their own. There's a sense about both the plot and the characters that they're out there waiting to be born, like a finished sculpture hiding in a rough-hewn block of marble. All that said, there are few emotional rushes that match an author's initial upload of his or her first book onto a major ebook platform.
What's the story behind your latest book?
At any point in time, one can prioritize the threats to our way of life. The press and politicians highlight the great external threats to the Nation, and those threats are formidable. My take, however, is that the most pressing of existential threats to the United States comes from within; hence, Custos: Enemies Domestic. The sidebars in the book will lay out the case.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I use a Mac Air to allow me access to multiple platforms.
