Interview with Jasen Flint

How do you approach cover design?
Cover designs are the first thing readers see and, for better or worse, it's usually a factor in their decision to purchase a book. There are many sites that will provide a pre-made, generic cover and those are great, however I prefer to look for more custom cover designs. Ultimately, I'm asking readers to take a chance and spend their hard-earned money on my books. I think it's incumbent on me to design a book cover that reflects the quality of my work. It's hard to do that, with some generic covers.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
Pillars of the Earth
Where the Red Fern Grows
First Lord's Fury
Side Jobs
Flint

My five favorite books all have characters that are larger than life. The stories are rich and, in some cases, the sarcasm is hilarious.
What do you read for pleasure?
Sci Fi / Fantasy
Jim Butcher - Anything from this author. He's simply fantastic.
Laurell K Hamilton
George RR Martin

Contemporary Fiction
Michael Crighton - I still re-read his work.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I started with Nook and then migrated to a Kindle. I'm currently envying my wife's Ipad Air.
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
Word of mouth. I'm a new author and I publish short stories on free websites. I've been fortunate to have developed a loyal set of readers, who have encouraged me to self-publish. At this time, I'm using word of mouth advertising.
Describe your desk
It's a little bit of a hurricane. It's wild on the edges, but calm in the center.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in rural Montana. This type of environment really helped my imagination to flourish, because there wasn't a whole lot of activities. As a result, science fiction stories captivated my attention and that has influenced my current writing.
When did you first start writing?
I've written since I started reading, almost. I guess I really started getting serious about writing short stories in middle school. I had a great teacher who encouraged me to put my stories on paper.
What's the story behind your latest book?
My latest book is related, obliquely, to my own life and my personal experiences are a big influence in the book. I won't go into anymore detail, except to say, that this book "Shattered Crystal" is very personal to me.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I've wanted to be an author ever since I started writing. Unfortunately, I don't have the time or the ability to devote 100% of my time to writing. I'd love to be a traditionally published author, but at the same time, I love the idea of people being able to publish their own stories. I've always wondered if there were truly amazing author's out there, who just didn't have an outlet for their material. Independent publishing gives readers the opportunity to sample new, raw and unpolished authors and material. I love that about Indie Publishing.
