Interview with Jax Stuart

Published 2024-02-17.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
Oh, my goodness! I can't choose just 5! No really, I'm a serious book nerd. On my bookshelves you'll find all sorts - a huge dose of MM with authors such as Alice Winters, Ariana Nash, Charlie Novak and Rhys Everly. Then there's a ton of YA and NA - I love the Throne of Glass series by Sarah J Maas. You'll also find the classics on there. I think I've read everything that Jane Austen published more than once.
What do you read for pleasure?
I read for an escape, running away into other worlds and being someone else for a while
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I read on my phone, mostly. It goes everywhere with me, so I always have a book on hand.
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
Social media. Getting out there and getting to know the readers
Describe your desk
I sit in a little corner in the sitting room where my husband made me a desk. I've got pictures of my book covers up, art from my daughter, and the art I commissioned of some of my characters. It's cozy.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I live in Scotland. Never lived anywhere else, and haven't wanted to except maybe for Greece. I don't think it influenced my writing. Growing up as a reader did. There wasn't a lot to do as a kid, so I knew the library pretty well.
When did you first start writing?
Aged 11, but gave it up for a couple of years. I kept going back to it until eventually I just decided to make my dream reality.
What's the story behind your latest book?
I'm currently finishing up an omegaverse book. It's part of a series
What motivated you to become an indie author?
Control. Plain and simple.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Getting out to other readers who are wary of a certain site and their reach
What do your fans mean to you?
Everything. They are the reason I get to keep writing
What are you working on next?
I'm working on book 4 in the Sweetwater Pack series and a secret project
Who are your favorite authors?
Alice Winters, Ariana Nash, Rick Riordan.... I could be here for days, but they make up most of my home library
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
Paying the bills. I still have a day job and two kids to feed
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Reading mostly. I like playing games on my phone while listening to k-pop or an audiobook
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
I follow a lot of fellow writers!
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Yes, it was called The Queen of Cats. I was 11
What is your writing process?
It varies from project to project. Sometimes I'm a panster, just letting the story guide the way, other times I'm a plotter, setting out the chapters.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
I've been reading since I was 4... so at that point it was Spot the Dog books, you know, the ones with the flaps. I remember reading Tamora Pierce, The Song of the Lioness. It really left an impression on me.
How do you approach cover design?
I let my cover designer take the lead on that one
