Interview with Jay Cannon
Published 2017-06-28.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I love writing. Ideas constantly flood my mind and I am eager to get them down on paper. Using traditional publishing is tedious and time consuming. I like the ease and flexibility of the indie world.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Smashwords provides a free and "simple" means for publishing books and distributing them in several formats. The service provides lots of tools and advice to new and seasoned authors for how to be successful at publishing and marketing their books.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
The finished product. Seeing my book go live on a website. Of course having sales is great, but the process is the real fun. Also reviews like this: http://readper.com/2017/06/review-alien-hitman/
What do your fans mean to you?
Fans are everything to the success of an author. They provide energy, feedback and viral marketing for authors. Without fans an author is hobbled.
What are you working on next?
Once my current book is released I will work on the final book in my trilogy. They I will work on a new book that is not science fiction based.
Who are your favorite authors?
Dan Brown, Malcolm Gladwell and Arthur C. Clarke.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
I'm excited to see what happens to the characters in my book. They often take on a life of their own reveal things to me that I had not planned. That desire keeps me up at night and pushes me to my laptop in the morning.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I watch the news, read books, ride my bike and chat with people at local bars.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
I tend to read paperback books. I'm part of a book club that reads science fiction books. So word of mouth is how I discover new books.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
No, but I remember it being a science fiction story. I got an A in English class for the story. I feel that helped to encourage me to write more.
What is your writing process?
I think up the story, usually triggered by everyday events. I create an outline around the story. I write sections where I try to put myself in the characters' shoes. I then fill in the gaps with details of the story.

This book centers around an alien invasion of Earth. Unlike other stories about alien invasion of Earth this one looks at it from the perspective of the aliens who see it as a business venture. The only thing standing in the way of the Earth being strip mined out of existence is a kid and a small alien fugitive.
This version contains images along with more romance and violence.
