Interview with Jay Mullings

When did you first start writing?
Like any literate child, I started young. I always had a knack for making people laugh and teachers used to pass my stories around and laugh together. A better question would probably be when did I realise I had a talent for writing? I saw it as a hobby until I felt a strong urge to stop talking about other peoples work and do my own instead. That happened in my early 20's...
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
London born and Jamaican bred. I had the experience of growing up in both a big city and a country town. It helped ground me but it also reminded me that there is a bigger platform out there.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Taking an idea or thought in this case and making it into a tangible thing which people can interact with. There is no greater joy than creating something useful to another person that has a positive impact on their life.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I like having final say on how I am represented. Indie which is short for Independent is exactly what it says on the tin. I have autonomy on my voice and what I allow to be disseminated.
What's the story behind your latest book?
I want to help people and I want to touch their lives. 'The Thought Book' is about positivity but it gives all the responsibility to you and your ability to make yourself better. It isn't preachy or overstated. It's the right combination of empathetic, blunt and positive. Read it if you don't believe me :-)
What do your fans mean to you?
When I get some I'll let you know :-) I'm grateful for the support I have been getting on my journey to being a writer and for the work I have produced so far and the awards I have won. I'm a fan of positivity so it's a mutual appreciation.
What are you working on next?
I have a few creative projects on the boil. A follow up to 'The Thought Book' has already been written I'm just awaiting the right moment for it's release. I also have been continuing my screenwriting and that has been fruitful in that I now have an impressive back catalogue which I think shows a lot of my range and potential for variety.
Describe your desk
Big, dark and handsome! Just like the owner :-) It is a magnificent beast. It's bespoke in every way and it also has Written Mirror etched into it.
What is your writing process?
Think it, feel it and then it's probably okay to write it :-)
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
Food! I love food haha... Just the realisation that each day is one you can never get back and it motivates you to do your best.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I play tennis, video games every now and then and I also cook quite a lot. I believe in having multiple forms of stimulus in your life.
How do you approach cover design?
Make it memorable and don't accept any less than the best possible design.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Too early to say but hopefully the impact is big and continues to be for a long time. This is just the beginning and true success is usually measured by consistency and longevity. So for now smashwords is a vehicle and the journey has just begun.
Who are your favorite authors?
Too many to list. Alive or dead? SACD (I am Sherlock Holmes LOL), Robert Greene, Sun Tzu, JK Rowling, Roald Dahl, Paulo Coelho, Dan Brown, Maya Angelou, C L R James, Alice Walker, Malcolm X and Marcus Garvey. There are many more I could mention.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
The Alchemist, 48 Laws of Power, Harry Potter Series, Da Vinci Code and Watchmen (Graphic Novel but still)

They each show the power of intelligence in various forms and people skills. These books also capture quite a bit of the human emotional spectrum and the capacity for good or bad depending on personal agenda.
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
Word of mouth and social media. Just being a person whom people can identify with has helped with sales.
