Interview with J C Gordon

Published 2013-09-22.
What do you read for pleasure?
Paranormal Romance/Urban Fantasy. I am in love with that genre though I have equally enjoyed others like crime novels, science fiction and romance.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I have a Kindle but would love a Kindle Fire or other tablet. Will need to save up some cash though :)
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
I am predominantly on Facebook under my other pen name of Jaz Cullen. I have been lucky to have an existing reader base from my free work on Literotica. I also have a Blog and a Twitter account that has kind of lapsed for a little while now.
Describe your desk
Good question LOL! It is a computer desk with dual monitors so I can chat with my friends and write at the same time. I have an "A Special Auntie" notebook and pen for jotting down notes and beside that I have 2 Christmas gifts from my special online best friends; a black fairy sculpture from NZ and a winged Tazmanian Devil christmas tree ornament from Canada.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I was born in Corby, England, but moved to South Africa for 3 1/2 years when I was 8. Returned to the UK and moved to Scotland where I still live now. I have tried to write most of my life but always seemed to lack focus and most definitely struggled with believing anyone would want to read anything I had written. I was blessed to meet such wonderful people online who believed in and encouraged me to the point I am now writing every spare moment I have.
When did you first start writing?
I've written small beginnings to a thousand stories throughout my life, but it was really only 3 1/2 years ago that I started a project and, thanks to the internet, had an outlet to publish it online for free. The response I received was so astounding that I just kept writing and haven't stopped since :)
What's the story behind your latest book?
Scent of Fear is a short contemporary romance I wrote to try my hand at something other than my FTI series which is in the paranormal romance genre. I'd hit writer's block on my latest book and I didn't want to stop writing so I penned this short romance which turned into two stories about Flynn Doherty and his brother Kieran. I hope to have Art of Seduction, Kieran and Grace's story ready for publishing soon.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
My readers. They have such faith in me and my work, and have been so supportive. I was continually asked where they could buy my work so I decided to take a leap of faith to see if anyone would like to buy my stories.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Smashwords is a brilliant site and fantastic tool to help an indie author to try their hand at self-publishing. There is so much support to be had for the novice author and the site is easy to use. I have nothing but glowing reviews for Smashwords.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
My readers! I am blown away by the comments, emails and Blog visits I receive. I am constantly thanked for writing my tales and bringing joy to my readers but I always remind them that without them, I wouldn't be writing at all. They are what spur me to keep penning new work. They are responsible for me being able to follow my dreams.
What do your fans mean to you?
They mean everything! They are my most precious commodity! I am blessed with the most amazing readers in the world who have been with me for years, their unwavering love and support often bringing me to tears it is so amazing. I can never thank them enough and I will always treasure the beautiful gift of friendship they give to me.
What are you working on next?
I have my fingers in many pies right now. I am continuing with the 7th instalment of my main body of work, the FTI series. I am writing a standalone steampunkish Scifi story called Gypsy Soul. And I am working on a demon assassin series, the first story being Demon Hunger. I also have another couple of paranormal romances in the works but they are further down the list at the momnent.
Who are your favorite authors?
Nalini Singh, Nalini Singh, Nalini Singh!!!!! Can any author surpass this wonderful woman in my eyes? NO!!! I love, love, love everything she writes, her psy-changeling series, her hunters guild series. She truly is an amazing author. I would strongly recommend her to anyone who has yet had the joy to read her work.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
Writing, my fans, writing :) I live, sleep and breathe writing and all that goes on around it. I wish I didn't have to go to my 9-5 job but as I have only just started as a published indie author I have no choice :)
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
What do you mean...not writing? LOL!!! Okay, yes sometimes I need a time out. Some nights it's just cool to veg out in front of the TV with a Marvel Superheroes movie or even a trip to the movies. I tend to be very much a homebody so I don't tend to venture out very much or do anything drastically exciting :)
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
Friend recommendations. A lot of my followers on Facebook are avid readers and they tend to post what they're currently reading. If it sounds like something that would interest me, I go take a look.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
The first story I ever wrote to completion is Fighting the Inevitable, the first instalment of my FTI series. I cringe when I read it now as the writing needs a lot of work. I have improved so much over the years but the essence of the story is still as exciting and amazing to me as it was when I first penned it.
What is your writing process?
I open a word document and start writing LOL. I am not a very disciplined writer as in having a set plan or direction. My work is very organic. I tend to have an idea for a specific couple and then I just start writing. I find that when I try to structure a plot it hampers my creativity. Often I think I am going to take one direction but when I write the chapter, the characters go off in a completely different one.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
The Lion, The Witch and The Wardobe (Narnia). I remember it vividly and I was about 7 when I read it. I fell in love with fantasy then and have never lost my love of it. I wanted to travel through that wardrobe and see all those amazing things. Fabulous book!!!
How do you approach cover design?
Cover design was what kept me from becoming an indie author for over a year. I lacked funds to commission cover art and have no artistic ability in that direction. Eventually, three wonderful friends got together and paid a designer to commission the cover for Scent of Fear. It certainly was a learning curve though. I was unable to articulate what I wanted so the draft cover process was enlightening. Dawne Dominque did a great job and I am grateful for her perseverance with me.
What advice would you give to any other aspiring indie authors?
Follow your dream! If writing is in your blood then take that leap of faith! It doesn't matter how many people do or don't read your work. As long as you have the joy of writing in your soul then live it, enjoy it, and most of all have fun! Even if your stories touch only a handful of people, you have touched them, and there can be no greater joy than knowing you've made a difference in someone's world.
