Interview with Jean Paul

Describe your desk
My desk is clean, it overlooks the sea.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in the Ivory Coast in the 1970s.
This greatly influenced my writing, both in terms of style and substance.
There is nothing like the extraordinary experience of life for great fiction.
When did you first start writing?
I first started writing at 15, in French High School.
What's the story behind your latest book?
My latest book is Year Of The Cheetah.
It is the story of the American Dream lived from an African perspective.
The story is very contemporary and tackles the social issues of our time.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
The conviction that I have a voice.
The snobbery of traditional publishing.
I have nothing against those folks: Their task is to pick winners like hedge fund managers, and they should.
Their objective is therefore diametrically opposed to mine, which is to express myself freely and produce a work of art without judgement.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Smashwords is the most democratic publishing vehicle on the planet.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Voicing my conflict with the world.
What do your fans mean to you?
Fans are the intrinsic life of a book, they give it a soul.
What are you working on next?
The sequel of Year Of The Cheetah
Who are your favorite authors?
Henry Miller, Louis Ferdinand Celine, Emil Cioran, Ernest Hemingway, Scott Fitzgerald, Philippe Djian, Marguerite Duras,
Jean d'Ormesson, Raymond Carver, Barry Lopez, Tom Wolfe, Pat Conroy, Francoise Rey.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
The sun, the writing, and the clock of life ticking towards death.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I travel the world, swim in the ocean, read books, play tennis, paint, cook, and meet interesting people.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
Through reviews.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Oh yes. Thirty years ago, in Africa.
I wrote a short story in French about the American Dream.
I was a young man then, and it doesn't seem so much time has passed.
What is your writing process?
Let it rip.
" I am simply the secretary of my sensations." Cioran said.
He nailed it.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
Snows Of Kilimanjaro.
Extraordinaire !
How do you approach cover design?
No one else but the author can have a specific vision about the cover.
The rest are approximations.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
Voyage To The End Of Night
The Air Conditioned Nightmare
On The Road
The Great Gatsby
Darkness at Noon
What do you read for pleasure?
Novels, short stories, poetry.
