Interview with Jeff Jackson

Published 2015-06-27.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
I don't remember the title, but it was a short for a junior high English class. It was a story of a soldier sacrificing himself to save his comrades. My teacher, Mrs. Sheridan, kept it because she liked it so well and encouraged me to in writing. I also had her for m high school senior English class and she had me write shorts for her that she kept as teaching guides. She is retired now, but she still used them when my brother went through 6 years later. She was instrumental to my writing and having the belief in myself to do so.
What is your writing process?
I have actually written three novels, of which all will eventually be available here, and have approached each differently. The only constant has been to make a thorough outline before starting.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
I don't, but I am sure it was something like Dick and Jane (laughs)
How do you approach cover design?
In the past, I had people who did art for me. I am also a musician and have always had someone else do my art. I only had limited help on the "Emerald" cover, but plan to resource cover art out in the future as I did in the past. Honestly, my art is all of words and sounds. I couldn't draw a stick person.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
Oh, Wow! So many books out there that are great for different reasons. Isaac Asimov's "Foundation Trilogy" was a major player for me. Dean Koontz has several books that are out of this world in my mind, my favorites being "False Memory" and "The Bad Place". I used to work with Black Labs Publishing and their agent used to compare me to Koontz....Quite an honor to hear, though I am not sure how true it is. "The Handbook for Outlaws and Rebels" by Mark Mirabello is a little known gem. I will round it out with Stephen King's "Needful Things".
What do you read for pleasure?
Suspense, Horror, King, Koontz, occasionally some erotica. Being a literary person, my mind can form so much more vivid images than any camera could capture. I plan to branch that direction a bit since I have received many compliments on the sexuality that has been included in my books.
Describe your desk
It's a big, bulky corner desk with a computer and a fish tank. I keep baby gold fish and Koi in it when the fish in my pond have their mating season. I find them very relaxing and they never disturb me.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I am from the Appalachian valley and have the dialect in my speech. I have to be mindful not to type the way I talk, not that I sound too hickified, just that I have a Kentucky draw in my speech.
What are you working on next?
Another music album once I have the remaining books I have finished formatted for eBooks.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Usually on my Harley, with my family, doing woodwork, or with my fish ponds and parrots.

It all started in 1973. A pair of eyes, as green as emeralds, drove a mentally challenged boy to murder. Then again it happened in 1995, when the emerald green eyes caused a young wife to jump to her doom. They say life goes in circles.
