Interview with Jeff Dejent

What is your writing process?
My novels / screenplays are best described as historically correct fiction. I do my best to tie in my story lines with real events.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
I was overwhelmed by Beowulf when I was in high school. The sense of doom and gloom sent my heart racing.
How do you approach cover design?
I believe covers for novels have to convey an air of mystery.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
I like books like: The Codebreakers by David Kahn.
What do you read for pleasure?
Tom Clancy.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
Kindle
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
You CAN judge a book by it's cover.
Describe your desk
I work all day at a desk top computer running Windows 8.1 Pro. I keep my monitor in the portrait position. In portrait, as opposed to landscape, each page of my current project is about 150% larger than a plain piece of white paper.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up and went to school in Milwaukee Wisconsin. The city of Milwaukee taught me neighborhoods. That's why it's easy for me to write for characters from different ethnic backgrounds.
When did you first start writing?
I tried writing novels from high school on forward. Didn't get anywheres until I discovered the works of Stephen J. Cannell. The late great Mister Cannell invented / perfected the multiple hero action adventure genre for 8 PM television. My works add multiple villains to the mix, each with a different personality and a different set of motives.
What's the story behind your latest book?
Taken together, my works have the same heroes from one story to the next. I'm hoping someday a big name critic will call me the successor to Ian Fleming. That's what I'm hoping.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
Publishing companies and film production companies are looking for writers with a body of work. A guy with one novel under his arm isn't going anywhere. The best way to get a for real contract is to have a huge page on Smashwords with multiple entries.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Smashwords is better than Amazon. With Amazon you are just with Amazon. The inventory is so big you have little chance of discovery. Smashwords, on the other hand, sends your works out to multiple publishers of all shapes and sizes. Your chances of being discovered are much improved. That's a good thing.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
My novels describe things I wish had happened to me. They flesh out all the missed opportunities in my 'so called' life.
What do your fans mean to you?
I prefer fans who enjoy my books without subjecting them to analysis.
What are you working on next?
I'm writing on the World Trade Center bombing.
Who are your favorite authors?
Tom Clancy. Jules Verne (Tom Clancy's predecessor) Stephen J. Cannell. James Patterson.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
Distance running is my anti-psychotic. Connecting to the internet is my mood elevator.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Distance running. Weight lifting. Software defined radios. Computer hacking.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
I browse Smashwords.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Yes, but I'm too ashamed to describe it in public.
Why should you get a movie deal?
I should get a movie deal because I have authored a companion screenplay for each and every one of my novels. When I write a novel I'm careful to get the story up into the dialogue. That makes it easy to rewrite as a screenplay. Also, I break the chapters down in my novels to numbered scenes. That makes it easy for a director to follow my storyline and character development. He can go back and forth between the novel and the screenplay and never get lost. My works are almost completely free of- 'special effects'. They can be brought to the screen on a very modest budget.
