Interview with Jennifer Elizabeth Masters

When did you first start writing?
In 7th grade English, we were required to write an original essay. I wrote a story about, "How To Bathe A Cat." The story turned out to be far more humorous than I had originally planned. This was my first article.
What's the story behind your latest book?
As a life, love and sex coach, I help people love themselves - fearlessly. I am also an Intuitive. I was "told" to write a book about sex, by God in January, of 2012. I was living in Boulder, Colorado at the time. You don't forget things like that. I thought that it was weird, but God's response was, "People are motivated by sex. Sex will bring masses of people to spirituality. Write a book about sex!" So I did.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
I love writing books that will help people live happier lives. I have found a way to install humor along with honesty and candor to illustrate how we react to situations within relationships. Relationships are our biggest way to learn more about ourselves. Hence, my writing about relationships and sexual issues.
What do your fans mean to you?
Without fans, I am writing into a void. My fans are everything to me!
What are you working on next?
My next book, is called "Heart's On Fire." I am waiting to receive guidance about the direction. At first I thought my next book would be erotica. A book to light other people's hearts and other things on fire. But we shall see. I take guidance from the big guy upstairs.
Who are your favorite authors?
Louise Hay, James Redfield, Greg Bradden, Thich Nhat Hanh, Charlotte Kasi.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
Are you kidding me? I love life. Getting out of bed is one of the highlights of my day! The earth is a beautiful place to live. I love writing my blog each day, knowing that people wait for it. I love coaching people through their issues, so that they can live happier better lives. Life inspires me. I am very happy and grateful to be alive each day.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I love taking my dogs for long walks out in the Mojave desert. I also travel a lot. I visit Boulder, Colorado regularly. I love to drive rather than fly. I enjoy swimming, visiting the beach and meeting new people. I teach workshops and webinars. I spend a large part of my time working on projects for you.
What is your writing process?
I get guidance and inspiration through meditation or when I am walking my dogs out in the desert. I sit down, say a prayer and connect. It is like linking up to The Universe. The words flow through me. Where I have difficulty is how much of what I write gets cut. I love what I have written, but not all of it makes it into my books.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
Siddhartha was one of the most impactful books I ever read. Another was, Awakening The Buddha Within. I interviewed Lama Surya Das and wrote an article about his book. Interviewing others is one of the ways I became a better writer.
How do you approach cover design?
I have ideas and share them with my publishing house. Starlight Press does my cover design. His first cover for Orgasm For Life was amazing, like The Garden of Eden. But I knew it wasn't right for the book. His second was the one you see today. I have had three cover designs for Orgasm For Life before I settled on the perfect one for this book. I always check with my gut to see what is best. My gut never lies to me.
What do you read for pleasure?
I read books about business. How to create speeches and talks for others. I used to read a lot more. Now I spend my time writing instead of reading.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I would have to say Ipad.
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
Blogging and sharing with Facebook, Linked In and Twitter works best for me. This way I get the word out to thousands of people all at once.
Describe your desk
Mahogany wood, old and comfortable. It has two arms that fold up or down. My cat usually lays across my desk when I write. His name is Percy. Once Orgasm For Life becomes a best seller, I am trading this one in for a white wooden desk from Pottery Barn. I have had my eye on that desk for a while.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I was born and raised in Toronto, Ontario, or affectionately known as The Great White North. The REAL great white north. I spent a lot of time outdoors. I swam in the summer months and walked to school, a long way. I lived in a very safe community, where we knew everyone on our street, and most of the people on the next two streets. My father grew a vegetable garden every year. I spent a lot of time outside weeding and hoeing. I love nature. Connecting with nature every day helps keep my head clear so I can write.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I just stepped into it. I love writing. This is the best delivery system for the greatest number of people.
When do you think you will hang up your writing hat?
Probably never. Writing has become a way of expressing my joy for life to others. I know many struggle with life, as I used to. As long as there is pain in the world, I will be writing to help.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Yes, it was in 7th grade for my teacher, Mr. Barringer. "How To Bathe A Cat."
