Interview with Jennifer Lewis

What do you read for pleasure?
I read all kinds of books, fiction and non-fiction. I love exploring new characters, places and situations, and learning new things. I've also been in a book group with four friends for nearly twenty years now, so I have fellow readers to discuss them with and to give me recommendations.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
Right now I read on an iPad with the Kindle app installed. I also sometimes read on my phone. I enjoy reading on something I can take with me everywhere.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in London, England in a family of book lovers, so I was immersed in stories from a very young age. My family had several old editions of fairy tales that had belonged to my grandmother, and an old illustrated version of the Arthurian legends, and those always stirred my imagination. At home and in school I read many British classics that inspired me, including C.S. Lewis, Robert Louis Stevenson, Jane Austen, Charlotte and Emily Bronte, D.H. Lawrence, E.M. Forster and, of course, Shakespeare! I'm sure growing up reading British literature shaped my writing in ways I'm not even aware of.
When did you first start writing?
I used to make up stories and draw them in comic strip form from a very young age. I didn't develop the confidence to write an entire book until I was in my early twenties.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I loved the idea that I could write something and share it with readers without a long wait. I've published many books the traditional way, and it's at least a year from coming up with the idea to seeing it out "in the wild"--and that's with Harlequin which is one of the quickest publishers out there.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
I love being able to embark on an adventure with my characters.
What are you working on next?
The next book in my current series! See what I'm up to at www.jenlewis.com.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I love the outdoors, especially running, hiking, kayaking and riding horses. I enjoy the beach and luckily it's always beach weather where I live.
