Interview with Jessica Grace Coleman

What do you read for pleasure?
I read absolutely anything I can get my hands on! My favourite genre is probably the thriller, but I love a good bit of horror and some comedy thrown in as well. In order to be a successful fiction writer, I believe you have to read as much as you can of every different genre there is - plus non-fiction books - in order to expand your own style and storytelling abilities.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
At the moment I have the Kindle Paperwhite, which is great for reading wherever you want. I also have the Kindle app on my phone so I can continue reading my current book wherever I am and whatever I'm doing. However, although I love e-readers and the opportunities they have given independent authors such as myself, I still love a good old-fashioned actual, physical book!
Describe your desk
Depending on what I'm working on, my desk can be either incredibly tidy, or a complete mess. Generally, it's covered in books I'm reading, my own paperbacks, notebooks with all my ideas scribbled in, my laptop, and - of course - a wide range of cups and mugs from my endless cups of tea!
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in a small village in Staffordshire called Little Haywood, and it has most definitely influenced my writing, as I used it as a basis for my 'Little Forest' paranormal mystery series. While not exactly the same, Little Forest is based on my home village, with local town Willowton based on Stafford and nearest city Birston based on Birmingham (the county of Covershire is based on Staffordshire in general). I use a lot of similar rural locations in my books, as well as the whole feel of living in a small village where everyone knows everyone else as well as their private business. These types of locations have allowed me to create a believable village where the unbelievable grows out of.
When did you first start writing?
I used to write bits and pieces throughout high school, but it wasn't until I was around 23 when I seriously decided to get into writing. I took an online creative writing course and immediately started planning my first novel, something which took me two years to write on top of my full-time job. Once I'd decided to self-publish, I increased my writing and have published four novels and one short story collection in the past two years.
What's the story behind your latest book?
My current work in progress is 'The Gloaming,' which is the fifth novel in the Little Forest paranormal mystery series. This book follows the Little Forest Investigations gang to Ireland, where they have a rather large spectre problem to deal with. I love rural Ireland and as one of the main characters in the series is Irish, I thought this would be a perfect opportunity to incorporate an Irish visit into the book. The rest of the novel takes the LFI gang further into the murky depths of the Former World, and they come closer than ever to finding out who is behind it all. This book sets up the storylines for the next three books in the series.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
After writing my first novel, I did extensive research into the publishing industry and the statistics regarding how many authors get published, how many books they sell, the royalties they are likely to get and so on. They were depressing, to say the least, and when someone mentioned online publishing to me, I started looking into it. The fact that you can (almost instantly) get your work online and 'out there' to prospective readers without the years of trying to find an agent and/or publisher first is amazing. I also love the complete creative control you have over your books - the title, the content, the cover... you control everything. It's great!
Who are your favorite authors?
I have many favourite authors from a wide range of genres, including: Stephen King, Jostein Gaarder, Tana French, Janet Evanovich, Suzanne Collins, JK Rowling, Alex Gardner, Nick Hornby, Edgar Allan Poe, Chuck Palahniuk, Neil Gaiman and many, many more!
