Interview with Jessica Durben

What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
I'm going to be completely honest with you... I'm still learning how to market and self promote. I think the most helpful way so far has been through word of mouth.
Describe your desk
My actual desk is a t.v. dinner tray that I set my lap top on. Or if it's nice outside I sit at a lawn table. When I was a teenager and just starting to scribble it was cluttered with pieces of papers with little odds and tid-bits.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in Newport News VA, honestly, my parents are divorced. That being said during the summer months I would spend the summer with my mom and my sister in St. Clair MO. It was hard to maintain and keep friends, I turned to books and haven't looked back since.
When did you first start writing?
I started making up stories when I was eight. I was hooked by the time I was a freshmen in high school.
What's the story behind your latest book?
My latest book actually came to me in a very vivid dream. I couldn't get the characters out of my head, I had to share.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I love writing. It just seemed natural. I love other indie authors and have come across some new favorite authors that way. Hopefully, I can become someone's new favorite author.
What are you working on next?
Right now I am working on Taming Her Howl, this story involves Austin and Autumn's romantic adventure. I'm very excited about it.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
Many people don't know this, my husband was diagnosed with cancer 3 months after we got married. (Don't worry he's in remission.) It was a pretty challenging ordeal and I learned a lot about life and the human character, spirit. I won't take a day that I am healthy and able to enjoy life for granted. That's one of the reasons I decided to pursue my dream.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
When I'm not writing I spend my time reading, hanging out at home with my fur kids, and awesome husband. I work in a theme park and make awesome candy. Fudge, Candy Apples, dip fruits you name it I can probably make it.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
I usually just search a topic and see what pops out.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
I found the first story I ever wrote. Flirting with revising it and publishing it.
How do you approach cover design?
There is no rhyme or reason to my cover designs. I just imagine the characters, the scenes, and how I feel when I think about my story. Then I try to create an image that causes people to get those same feelings. At least I hope so.
