Interview with Jim Traylor

Published 2017-07-12.
What do you read for pleasure?
Novels. No particular genre... just whatever catches my eye or I have heard good things about
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I do my e-reading on my laptop. That way I have the book available for reference while I am writing my own works.
When did you first start writing?
I wrote my first stories in grade school.... which I wish I still had.
What is your writing process?
My writing process veries from book to book. Mu last book, The Spud Gristwall story required a considerable amount of research and revision. The Monkey Soldiers and Siam Song just seemed to roll out of my brain with little effort. All have been fun to create.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
I do remember the first book I read but I can not remember the title. It was a WW II war story about the Burma campaign. I was living with my parents in Munich Germany but that book transported me to the jungles of Southeast Asia and I fought right along with the heroes of the book.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I was an Army Brat with strong connections to the South, where my Grandparents lived. Everything influences my writing, from the moment I get out of bed in the morning until I go to bed at night.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
The greatest joy in writing is the fantasy process that goes through my head.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
I always wanted to publish my work but not through a conventional publisher. When I learned of Smashwords, I found my outlet.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
When I'm not writing, I'm thinking about writing and adding to or taking from my current story.
What are you working on next?
My next novel will be another Sothern Gothic, tentatively titled Rupert's Ridge.
