Interview with Jocelyn Adler

What's the story behind your latest book?
My latest book is "Bad Decisions," book two in my Smart, Sexy Nerds series, and it is about Tabitha, a busy law student who loves YA Fiction, and has a slightly scandalous past. She falls in love with Jason and Nate - two men who are already in a relationship with each other.

You may have seen Jason and Tabitha in my first novel, "Bad Penny." After finishing "Penny," I knew that I wanted to write a trilogy, and that Damian's book would be the last. Out of all the other supporting characters, I liked Jason the most, he seemed like he would be interesting to write about. Of all the female characters, Tabitha jumped off the page for me, she was vibrant from the moment I imagined her. Nate I made up out of whole cloth.

Well, that's not entirely true. Nate is the embodiment of a lot of things I miss about my home state of New Mexico. Although I love the Bay Area, I miss the steady influence of Native culture in New Mexico (Nate is Navajo). I miss the strong presence of the arts, and the activism that's obvious in New Mexico's citizens and its history. It's strange, because I read so much, and I rarely run across a modern-day Native American character. I wrote Nate because he's a character I'd like to read.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
I love it when I'm editing and I can see the scene in my head going from a jumbled pile of letters to something that will actually evoke a thought, a feeling, or a desire in my reader.

Writing is a form of telepathy, and if I do it well, it should carry a concept straight from my mind into yours. If that isn't magic, I don't know what is!
What do your readers mean to you?
I've always turned to books to calm me down and bring me comfort. They keep me from being bored. But I can never truly relax and just read until I know I trust the author.

The fact that my readers are willing to trust me with their time, attention, and minds? That's really the highest compliment I can get. I hope that my books make you feel seen and cared for, and safe. Kelly Sue Deconnick once said that she felt like her most ardent fans were fans because her books, themselves, were fans of something inside that reader. I feel that way, too. If my writing resonates with someone, it's because I'm a fan of something in them.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
The first story that I ever wrote, that was any good, was a two-pager in my Freshman English class, about aliens who had no emotions, so they watched Earth to get a second-hand thrill. They were pretty sure we were going to blow ourselves up, but were fascinated in the interim.

My English teacher said, "You need to take writing seriously. This is really good." I listened to her! Eventually.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I'm a little bit of a control freak, in almost every area of my life. Given the choice, I'll always take the driver's seat! I'm so glad I made this choice - I love the camaraderie of other indie romance authors!
What are you working on next?
My "Smart, Sexy Nerds" series was supposed to be three books, but I got to book three, and I still wasn't quite sure what to do with Damian, the charismatic and handsome manager of Fernando's Club. So, I'm writing something that might qualify as a prequel, or possibly as an "affiliated stand-alone" ...and it's about Damian's sister.

Her name is Regan, and she's a coder in Silicon Valley with a crush on her coworker. Her coworker, who keeps making her speak in public. Regan has a fear of public speaking, so it's kind of an issue.
Who are your favorite authors?
Gosh, that's such a long list! I grew up on Tamora Pierce and Robin McKinley. I've been cross-polinating the SFF and Romance aisles of my local bookstores for decades, to the point that I feel responsible for both Paranormal Romance and Urban Fantasy. Right now, I'm eagerly awaiting the next books from Ilona Andrews, Penny Reid, Sarina Bowen, Zoe York, Ainsley Booth, Rebecca Roanhorse, Steven Brust, Ann Leckie, Kresley Cole, and more.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
Getting my daughter to school on time! I think my poor kid has more late slips than any other kindergartner in the USA.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Reading, or shopping for books. If you want to hear about a non-book hobby, you'll have to wait for me to get a life.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
There are so many great ways to discover new ebooks! I take advantage of the catagory searches on OverDrive at my local library. I look at my auto-suggests on Amazon. I keep an eye on my BookBub emails, and I also subscribe to Red Roses Romance and Book Barbarian. I follow a number of reviewers and review sites on Twitter, and check a few blogs for their "books on sale" posts.

There are so many books out there! I wish I had more time to read!
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
As a librarian, I'm so grateful to Smashwords for getting my books into libraries. I would never be able to finance my book habit on my own, and I certainly don't expect that my readers will be able to do so!

If you're interested in learning more about titles available on OverDrive and other library platforms, check out my posts in the "Steamy Library Books" Facebook group, or on Twitter at #SteamyLibraryBooks for some suggestions! Even if a book isn't in stock, most librarians are happy to get book suggestions!
