Interview with Joe Renter

What's the story behind your latest book?
Of all the dreams and nightmares that I've had over the years, one truly stands out in me. Just thinking about it still gives me a chill. It's one of those nightmares that begs to be shared. My kids occasionally ask me to tell them, again, about the dream. Mostly, I think, because they're trying to scare me.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I enjoy writing. At one time, I wanted to be a journalist. Being an indie author allows me to write on my own schedule, and my own topics.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
My son. He's 5, and so happy and energetic!
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I have three children, a wife and a house - there's ALWAYS something that requires my attention!
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
I read mostly non-fiction, but there are some authors that I'll look for new books from, before browsing through topics that I enjoy reading.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
In second grade, I wrote a story about the moon for my mom. After she passed away, I found it in some papers that she kept.
What is your writing process?
I have the worst process. I do nothing until an idea pops into my head, then I sit down and start typing.
How do you approach cover design?
Simplicity is the key, for me. Because I'm not very graphically inclined.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I have a Nook, one of the first ones. I'd love to upgrade, but this one still serves me just fine.
What do you read for pleasure?
Biographies, history, current events. Anything by Steven Ambrose.
Describe your desk
My desk...is far smaller than the pile of papers and other items squished onto it.
What are you working on next?
A sequel to Dragon Dreams. As I was writing Dragon Dreams, my daughters were proof-reading my stories for me. They gave me some excellent ideas for more short stories.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I don't know that where I grew up influenced my writing as much as when I grew up. I read Ray Bradbury's Martian Chronicles for an English Class, and that caused me to read a lot of science fiction. I next found Alan Dean Foster, who not only wrote sci-fi, but he wrote some fantasy stuff too. Both of those authors really struck a chord in me.
