Interview with John Brown

Describe your desk
Cluttered, I tend to leave things out instead of putting them away after I am done with something. It has to be really filled up before i organize it.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in Salt Lake City Utah. Not being a Mormon, I thought I was an outcast, so I spent a lot of time dreaming about being in another place where I would not feel shunned.
When did you first start writing?
Just about a year ago.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
It has given me the opportunity to get my work out in front of the customers and be judged by them and not the critics in a big publishing house.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Getting into an imaginary world where I can do anything.
What do your fans mean to you?
They give me validation. They give me a feeling of acceptance in my writing. The fans make it fun to do.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
The thought that I can do what I enjoy and get some rewards for it.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Try improving myself. Get out in the world and enjoy it.
What is your writing process?
I put myself in the mind of the main character. No matter who he is or what he is doing in the book, I get inside his head and enjoy doing anything I want through him.
How do you approach cover design?
It is just what strikes me. It should match the story, but I mainly see if it speaks to me.
What do you read for pleasure?
Detective stories
