Interview with Jonathan M Steele

What are you working on next?
At the moment I am in contact with CJ (he is no longer in the Philippines) and we are putting together the sequel to A Made Guy. We have to take a lot of legal advice however and that is a big (and expensive) headache.
Who are your favorite authors?
Well Dostoevsky was what got me and CJ talking in the first place. It is difficult to imagine a better writer.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
Well I always want to see how the book is doing! To see how many we sell on a daily basis. I am working each day on the sequel and talk with CJ most days.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
I usually do a Google search for a subject. Just put the .epub or .pdf in the search. there is something on every subject written somewhere.
What is your writing process?
Well, me and CJ just talked things over. He would then tell the story and I would record what he said. We sat up all night sometimes. The next day I would listen to the recording and put it down on paper. I always go over my writing before putting it into a PC. Then it's spell check and formatting.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
When I was a kid I sat up all night reading a book of stories by an Irish author called Joseph Sheridan La Fanu. I remember thinking that a good book was better than TV! I have been sitting up with a book ever since.
How do you approach cover design?
It was pretty easy. I wanted a view of New York with something that represented organised crime. A gun was obvious really. I did it on my mobile phone in ten minutes.
What do you read for pleasure?
I love PG Wodehouse. It is a kind of relaxing and enjoyable read. not too heavy.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
My phone does a pretty good job. I use Aldiko and Adobe reader and I find that it is all I need.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
It has made the whole process of publishing so easy. I just uploaded and then it started to sell. You need to get your book reviewed and work with other writers to help each other, but Smashwords is the perfect vehicle for doing just that!
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
I suppose the feedback from a reader. Anyone can write over a hundred thousand words and tell themselves what a good writer they are. But when someone reads your book and then emails you to say how good it was! That is when you know you've done it right.
