Interview with Jonathan Yanez

Published 2014-02-24.
How do you approach cover design?
Usually I have a very clear idea in mind. This works both for and against me with graphic designers.
What do you read for pleasure?
I like any book that can grab me in the first 10 to 20 pages. Most of the time I'll find myself in a science fiction or fantasy book.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
Kindle.
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
As crazy as this sounds, writing. I try and spend 90% of the time writing and only deviate when there are emails to answer or fans to interact with. I'm a firm believer that the more I write the better author I will became. Plus as a bonus my fans will have more content to enjoy.
Describe your desk
Next to a window with a dry erase board above and a set of samurai swords nearby.
When did you first start writing?
I'm sure I wrote stories while I was young but the first book I can remember starting was while I was in college. I must have been about 19, wow I feel old.
What's the story behind your latest book?
Thrive is a story about someone who questions how things are done. She goes from a person who truly believes she is doing the right thing to someone who sees the flaws in society and decides something has to be done.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Story development when I get the idea for a new book and while I'm outlining. Also interacting with fans has been great.
What do your fans mean to you?
Everything. They are the reasons I push myself everyday to be the best writer possible. I want them to see through my writing how much I value them and their time. My goal is for every book to be better than the last.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
I don't know very many people who have a work ethic as crazy as my own. My wife is definitely one of these people. When she gets up for work I'm either doing the same or maybe already at the keyboard, we're a team.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Usually at the gym, reading or playing with our dog and cat. Oh, video games too. I love a good game.
