Interview with Adam Blade

What's the story behind your latest book?
There are a set of stories that follow on from each other although they can be read individually if you would like to! The overarching story is that there is a new King in Whitelaw and his brother, upset he didn't get the Kingdom, plans to overthrow him at every turn. This book is the first 6 "episodes" (if you like) in the first year of the new King, and his adventures with his friends.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I've always wanted to publish a book and wanted to prove that I could do that. Due to time limitations and money and where I live, the indie author option was an accessible and cost effective way of achieving something I had on my bucket list. Also, it's amazing how many people say that they cannot write a book - but if I can, you can!
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Smashwords has been fantastic and I'm very grateful for their help in expanding the King's Reign universe to a wider audience. I published the original transcript of King's Reign in 2005 and this was a physical format. It was expensive to do and I had to sell literally at cost. Smashwords allows me to create King's Reign digitally for the first time, and is a lot easier and accessible for customers and fans.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
I love writing and creating worlds and characters. It's also a great feeling to see something you have created. Some say it might be therapeutic as well. Not only that, but sometimes you have an idea and creating a story can help you realise that idea on paper. When I saw King's Reign as a proper book was a pretty big moment for me.
What do your fans mean to you?
I think fans are the most important thing of all - after all those are the people who support you to create more. I hope King's Reign fans keep supporting the series and I am constantly trying to think of ways in which I can offer more to them from just the book. At the moment I am writing a King's Reign One Shot which is due for release by the end of this month, and it will allow new fans to get the original book at a discount, and also provide yet another story for fans to read. I am also considering writing some fan only stories, so get signing up to the King's Reign Fan Club!
I would also like to set up fan fic opportunities and I would choose the best stories to publish as an anthology sandwiched between two new stories I'll write at the beginning and end, but it depends on how many fans would want to do that.
What are you working on next?
I'm writing the sequel to King's Reign: The First Year which is, King's Reign: The Second Year which will either be out by the end of the year or early 2018. I will have the first King's Reign One Shot called Two Princes out by the end of March 2017 and there is also a few other King's Reign stories in the works.
The first is TiMESLiP which travels back in time to Jordan's dad's time and fills in some gaps and questions I found when I read the original King's Reign. This novel is half written, so I have another half to go so hopefully it will be out very soon.
I also have spin-offs ESTHER: Trial of A Princess and King's Reign: Hunter Talon in developments so I'm a busy bee.
Who are your favorite authors?
I have loads of favourite authors - these include JRR Tolkien, JK Rowling and Italo Calvino. David Mitchell's Cloud Atlas is one of my favourite books. I have an English degree, so I like lots of novels and literature and do like Shakespeare as you can probably guess if you have read King's Reign.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
I am a very optimistic and motivated person so I live life just like that. I always say I have three reasons to live - love, music and chocolate. As long as I get all three each day, I'm happy.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I write and perform music, like salsa dancing, learn languages and travel. I also love cooking - so gastronomy is one of my interests too.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
I often search for my favourite authors, or see what's on special because you can get some great novels for cheap that can lead you into anther favourite author. I also visit comic-cons all the time and there are often authors there promoting their books which can also be a good way to discover new worlds and stories.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Yes, it was when I was little and it was when I was at primary school. I used to hate PE, so I would be allowed to exercise my mind instead and I would write a story (usually an adventure with the class and my friends) and when they all came in tired from running about, the teacher would read the story I have written at the end of the day for the class.
What is your writing process?
I have two ways - write as I'm thinking so it develops as I write, or I plan it out. I have been known to write two stories at once, which I did with two of King's Reign stories in the First Year, so when I had writers block, I was writing another which helped move the block for the other one.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I like the Kindle App on my phone/tablet. I bought a Sony eReader many years ago and bought a cover for it so it looks a lot like a book. It has a memory card so really, you can fit as many ebooks as necessary on it. It's really good, but it's just as easy these days to read on phone or tablet though so I don't use it as much. That reminds me though, I have to finish reading War of the Worlds.
When did you first start writing?
I think I mentioned this in a previous question, but first time was at primary school when I was writing stories for the class. I continued this throughout my life, though I didn't really acknowledge it until I started poetry and songwriting when I was in my early teens. I took writing seriously when I was about 16 and I wrote my first complete song (including music) called Sweet As Sugar, Bitter As Salt after breaking up with my first girlfriend and then realised I could write.
