Interview with Josh Barnette

What is your e-reading device of choice?
Apple iPad
When did you first start writing?
I first started writing in college. I learned that I enjoyed writing and had some ability to create characters and tell their stories
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I enjoyed reading paperback novels published by well known authors and wanted a chance to publish my own work. The path to publish a paperback novel through a large publishing company based in New York City seemed daunting and nearly impossible.
What are you working on next?
Book 2 of American Warriors. Hope to release the book in mid 2015
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I love the outdoors, spend a lot of time hiking and, when I can get away, the lake.
What is your writing process?
I like to sketch out an outline, then create a rough draft on the iPad. Then I paste the iPad draft into Word and word smith. I prefer hard copies to review for final edits. I like to write near a window with a view or outdoors.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Smashwords has provided a simple process for publishing my book. It was very straight forward, the instructions were well written and easy to follow. I am now a published author..fantastic!
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
The greatest joy of writing for me is creating my characters and then living their lives as I see them. My characters are exactly how I want them to be and I have complete control over their actions. I really enjoy creating new characters in the middle of the book that interact with the main characters and potentially change the direction of the story.
What do your fans mean to you?
My fans are the best. They provide support, give me confidence and benchmarks for my success
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
I enjoy reading history books and typically have specific topics I am looking for. I complete a lot of research and try and look for interesting historical facts that are not well known. I generally search for the topic and then review similar books or topics the computer search engine generates
How do you approach cover design?
I contacted a graphic artist shown in the referral list. I contacted two of them by email and developed a comfort level with one artist.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
Jack Higgins- the Eagle has Landed.
Clive Cussler - The Mediterranean Caper, Lost City
W.E.B. Griffin - The Corps, Behind the Lines
Describe your desk
My Desk sits next to a window in my home. It looks to the north. I have a nice view of my backyard from there. My backyard is filled with Arizona native trees and shrubs. I have my computer as the centerpiece of my desk and a small stack of papers on the right side. I have a file cabinet below my desk and to the right that is filled with important papers, both personal and work related. I have a messy stack of papers, mostly bills on top of my file cabinet. My cat, Heidi, loves to sit on my desk while I type and create.
What do you read for pleasure?
I read Clive Cussler, Jack Higgins, W.E.B. Griffin and others for pleasure. I prefer action adventure set in the 1940s or with ties to the 1940s
