Interview with Joyce Savage

Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in a small town in Ontario, Canada. I always had a great imagination and I think it influenced my writing.
When did you first start writing?
My first real writing was some poetry that I wrote in high school. I even had it published in a contest in the local paper, as a sample of their entries. It didn't make honourable mention but I was still very honoured just to have it published.
What's the story behind your latest book?
My passion is spreading awareness of Borderline Personality Disorder and fighting the stigma surrounding it. I also like to share about Dialectical Behaviour Therapy, one of the best treatments for BPD, and the one that helped me recover. I like people to know that there is help out there.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I think that this is the best option for me at this point in my life. I believe that I have the best chance of reaching more people as an indie author right now. Reaching as many people as possible about BPD is my passion and my mission in life.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
The greatest joy of writing for me is being able to express myself. I've never felt able to express myself except through my writing. I am very shy in person but writing has helped me come out of my shell.
What do your fans mean to you?
My fans are people who may have BPD and need help. Hopefully I can provide some of that help in the way of advice regarding DBT. I can also suggest authors and books about BPD that may be helpful to them. If my fans are already in recovery, they can be a support to others who are where they were.
Who are your favorite authors?
Debbie Corso is one of my favourite authors. I have read all of her books. She is my inspiration! Definitely check out her books!
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
My husband and kids inspire me to get out of bed each day, as well as the promise of helping others through my writing - my book and social media.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I enjoy crocheting and knitting. Sometimes I bake. I also enjoy photography.
How do you approach cover design?
I believe the title is very important. I think about what will catch the reader's eye.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I read using the Kindle for PC app on my computer.

I never felt like a real person. Ever since I was little, but especially in my teens, I felt like a shadow: invisible, blending into the darkness. No substance, nothing. Never standing out, except to be bullied at school, which affects me to this day. I’m ready to come out of the shadows and tell my story now. I hope you learn about it and help me fight stigma and raise awareness.
