Interview with J. M. Rojas

What are you working on next?
I am currently writing the second book in the Brighteyes Chronicles: The Maker's Hand. I have also started writing a kid's fantasy book called Maximus Tanner & the Ring of Storms. Bouncing between two books is quite challenging, but it keeps my creativity flowing, without becoming stagnant.
Who are your favorite authors?
My favourite authors include: J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, Ursula Le Guin, Stephen Donaldson, Terry Brooks, Raymond Feist, David Eddings, Margaret Weis, Tracy Hickman and R.A. Salvatore.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
I could say my alarm… but that isn't very inspiring. I would have to say the need and drive to see my projects to completion.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Filmmaking or playing music with my friends in our respective bands.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
Friends' suggestions. Scrolling mindlessly through Smashwords… the usual ways.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Yes I do. I still have it. "The War For The Sword". Wrote it in high school. I got up to 70,000 words and I wasn't even halfway through the plot points. I stopped writing it because it started to sound a lot like The Lord of the Rings. There was some unique bits in it though. One day I'll go through and fix it up and finish writing it.
What is your writing process?
Sit down, procrastinate, waste time on social media, get tired, get scared I haven't done anything, then write.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
Yes. "Through The Ice" by Piers Anthony. Made me excited that I had finished my first book; and quite emotional, in regards to the themes. I found out not long after that it was originally written by a high school student named Robert Kornwise, who died.
How do you approach cover design?
An image pops in my head, and I try my best to find an artist or free domain image to create it.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
Too many to list. Will come back and answer this question properly later.
What do you read for pleasure?
Fantasy, science fiction and biographies of musicians and actors.
