Interview with Jude Knight

Published 2014-12-17.
How do you approach cover design?
I researched what other authors had said about cover design, and spent a lot of time thinking about the way I wanted to present the story. I also looked at many images, trying to find one that would work. I decided I wanted a great house and an invalid chair, but finding them was quite a trick! I've blogged about the cover journey, but the brief end point was that I eventually had the chair drawn by an artist I know. I also experimented with a number of fonts before I found one that worked at thumbnail size. I'm pleased with the result. What do you think?
What do you read for pleasure?
I read widely. I particularly like historical fiction and historical romance, sf, mystery, and fantasy. But I also read biographies, philosophy, contemporary novels. You name it, really.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I love my Kindle. I've also started reading books in iBooks on my iPad. But my Kindle is my go-to reading device of choice.
Describe your desk
I have a vari-desk. It sits on a table, and can be raised and lowered, so that I can stand for part of the day, and sit for part of the day. Because it moves up and down, I need to keep it tidy, which is a great help! I have two screens - a laptop and an attached monitor - and I often have the iPad sitting there, too. When I'm writing, I can have a google window up on one screen, my book database on the iPad, and my document file on the other screen.
When did you first start writing?
My mother swears I was telling stories to my toys in my playpen before I could talk. I had my first article and my first short story published in the newspaper the year I turned 14. That was 50 years ago. I've been a commercial writer of one sort or another most of my adult life, but my first love and my passion is fiction.
What's the story behind your latest book?
I began Candle's Christmas Chair to explain how the couple in my novel, Farewell to Kindness, got together. They came out of the crowd at the Assembly at Chipping Niddwick, and Viscountess Avery examined the invalid chair that had collapsed under my character Major Alex Reedepenning, during a line dance. When she diagnosed sabotage, and her husband backed her up, saying that she designed the chair, I knew I needed to know the backstory.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
Jim Azevedo made a compelling case for Smashwords and indie publishing at the Romance Writers of New Zealand conference earlier this year.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
I love it all. I love working out the plots, getting to know the characters, writing down the scenes that unreel inside my head, editing to make the text stronger, talking to great people on facebook, twitter, and goodreads. I love being an author.
What are you working on next?
I have Farewell to Kindness with beta readers, am doing character sketches and plot outlines for Encouraging Prudence, and researching canal boats for A Raging Madness.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
I love my work. I love my husband and my family. Life is good.
