Interview with J.D. Harding

What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Discovering the story.
Many times inspiration comes at inconvenient times- the shower, driving, in a class or meeting- and a quick note (mental or physical) is all there is time fore. Later, when putting pen to the paper, so to speak, it transforms into something larger. The grand scheme of things unfolds as I go.
And then of course there is always getting to meet a new character. Whether they are fighting for the side I am rooting for, or the other team, they all have something inter sting about them. I enjoy getting to know what that is and sharing it with my readers.
What are you working on next?
Currently I am working through an 8 short series in the Beneath the Rose. When it is done I will take a break from the serials and move on to individual, unconnected shorts.
What I am really excited about, however, is the new collaboration with a few other writers coming this October. The series itself revolves around the Fae and all that they do in this realm, and the others. And of course there is the erotic nature of the beast that is explored. The Veil of Undoing series has got to be the project I am most excited about at the moment. I just cannot wait for October!
Who are your favorite authors?
Such a tough choice! The list could go on forever.

Jules Verne
Anne Rice
Ann McCaffrey
Lewis Carrol
Edgar Allen Poe
Bram Stoker
Laurell K. Hamilton
Neil Gaiman
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
Poetry, songs, novels, discussion. The sheer communication from one being to another utilizing words. The whole idea of words turns me on- and not just in the erotic sense. Stimulation at its finest, motivation at its core fore me are words.
Even the poignant silence becomes an unspoken word at times.
And coffee. Probably more coffee than words (at first).
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Listening to music, walking, painting, reading and thinking. Exploring new fields of art (such as pottery, crocheting, dance, photography, etc.) and practicing accents. Currently working on my British accent.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
I like to browse. It doesn't have the same aesthetic appeal as browsing through a bookstore, big chain or mom and pop, but it has it's own appeal. I play with the settings (start at the last page, move the price range, or search by title/authors that begin with random letters) or check out what my favorite authors and friends are reading.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Oh deer yes! It was actually a fan fic with a close friend of mine. A high school melodramatic comedy about sex. It's base was not erotic, rather, hilarity. Up until that story I had only written essays or poetry.
Describe your desk
Small, tidy (I lie), and organized (by an oscillating fan).
What are your five favorite books, and why?
How to choose?
1. Interview With a Vampire by Anne Rice:
The character development between Luis and Lestate enchanted me. How one person could thoroughly walk through and explore two different types of vampires (the classic monster and the later developed but now classic tortured soul) at the same time and make both of them believable and compelling. To maintain the empathy of the reader while showing such outlandish extremes was new to me at the time I picked up this story.
2. Lord of the Rings by JRR Tolkien:
This is an epic tale. There is no other way to describe it. The entire world is a fantasy land I have spent many days, months even, exploring.
3. A Dirty Job by Christopher Moore:
Whenever I need a laugh- a good, hearty laugh- at all of the issues of everyday life and how it assails everything living it I read this book. It touches on a lot of real life drama with a genius compilation of hilarity.
4.HP and Prisoner of Azkaban by JK Rowling:
Of all the HP books this one is my favorite. This was when they started to get darker and it has my all time favorite Harry Potter character in it. Sirius Black! No spoilers (though it has been quite long enough already) but there are some major feelings rolling around about that character. Every time....
5. Wicked by Gregory Maquire:
I love stories that flip the archetype. Turning the bad guy inside out and revealing that they too were doing what they felt was right. Hearing the other side. Maybe they didn't do it the best way, or think things all the way through, but deep down, when the story is done, you understand. This also happens to be why I love the movie Maleficent!
What's the story behind your latest book?
My latest book, Bringing Down the Heat, #3 in Beneath the Rose - a short story erotica series- can be summed up as follows:
Supernatural crashes into the mundane in a violent way. Patrick, our protagonist, must learn to recognize where life's strangeness crosses over to the other side. First, though, he has to believe.
Then for kicks throw in an old flame and see how the fire ignites!
