Interview with Julia Jones

What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
Running my own business is Hard Work. I've got to be honest, there have been many days when I would rather crawl back under the covers and hide. But mothers are suffering, and this motivates me every day. In Australia the leading cause of maternal death is suicide!

I believe birth is about making mums too, and as birth professionals we support a sacred time of life that impacts all of humanity. We deserve to experience abundance and stability for our service to mothers.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I recently joined the Circus! I learning Aerials including trapeze and silks and loving every minute! I also love yoga, singing and playing piano.

My favourite days are spent with my husband and two children at home in the sunshine relaxing, drinking tea, gardening and climbing trees.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
My favourite books are non-fiction. I love books about motherhood and the best is What Mothers Do - especially when it looks like nothing written by Naomi Stadlen. My other passion is business, marketing and abundance and I adore The Big Leap by Gay Hendricks.
Describe your desk
I have a sit stand stool which keeps me fit! I love my Macbook Air and will never go back to a bigger computer again. I often take my computer outside and work in the garden when it's sunny.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Sharing concepts and ideas that have changed my life. When I write I often get teary! And that's when I know I'm writing something truly meaningful. I love it when my readers tell me how the information I share has changed their life!
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
When I was in primary school I wrote and illustrated a picture book about monsters! But most of my work is non-fiction.
What do you read for pleasure?
My brain has a huge capacity for information and so I generally prefer to read factual books! I'm very introverted and I like books that are more scientific and less about relationships. Believe it or not it is non-fiction that brings me most pleasure!
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
My home is Fremantle. I was born here, I live here and I will always come back here. It's a magical place between the Swan River and the Indian Ocean and the natural environment is very inspiring. I get my best ideas walking along the river and ocean near my home. The people here are very creative and growing up around artists, authors and musicians helped me to see that my dreams are possible. I always knew if I wanted to write, it was a real option.
When did you first start writing?
I have always been a prolific writer. From a very young age I wrote in my journal everyday and have dozens of journals dating back to primary school in my parents attic. I only really realised that I wanted to be a writer when I was travelling in India at the age of 21. I dabbled in fiction, but quickly found out that is not my strength. I now write about motherhood, marketing, food and mindset.
Why do you teach marketing to birth professionals?
It breaks my heart every time I hear of another doula giving up on her dream career and returning to an office job.

Doulas improve outcomes for mothers and babies in so many ways! Yet most women haven't even heard of the word doula. This is why I believe that as birth professionals we need to learn how to play the game. Running a businesses is an essential step in our service to mothers.
