Interview with K.A. Smith

Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Oh my gosh. The first story I ever wrote was a teen romance. Like a YA type story. I was probably still a preteen, laying on the floor with my three subject note book and pencil just writing away. It was called Explicit Friendship and I remember the girl character hit her head or something under water while trying to grab something shiny and a boy pulls her out. It was all so cheesy, but that's the kind of stuff I was reading. So I was writing stuff like that. I don't know how I knew the word explicit, but there you go.
What is your writing process?
My writing process involves a lot of coffee, followed by a lot of water. I usually turn on some mood appropriate music and just sit down. Sometimes I map out a story, sometimes I free write until I get something good going and take it from there. I use the computer, but I feel like I get better energy in a piece if I'm writing with pen and paper. I just feel closer to it.
I tend to write a few pages, several hundred words, then take a break for a few minutes, then go back to it. Sometimes I'm at home, sometimes I need a change of scenery though.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
My favorite books are:
Innocence of the Devil, by Nawal El Saadawi - The writing is so fluid and so rich. I get wrapped up in it and that, to me, is what a story should do.
The Passion, by Jeanette Winterson - The story weaves so much into each page. I see something I missed every time I read it. And Jeanette Winterson is one of my favorite writers.
Trash, By Dorthy Allison - Her stories, and this book, just resonate with me. She grew up with very little, she's a lesbian, she's passionate, and she puts all of that in her stories.Trash is no exception.
Stone Butch Blues, by Leslie Feinberg - No other book has made me feel the way this book did, and still do when I think about it. This book changes lives.
A Woman Like That, by various authors, edited by Joan Larkin - This book of stories made me look at myself. The stories were all so different and dynamic. I loved them.
Who are your favorite authors?
My favorite authors are mostly women and poets, like Nikki Giovanni, Audre Lorde, Anne Sexton, Adrienne Rich They have such stories in their poetry. It's so full bodied and language rich. I love Jeannette Winterson, Octavia Butler, Natasha . There are so many great writers, but those are a few of my favs.
What do you read for pleasure?
I love a good romance. Sci-fy is also a favorite of mine. I love poetry and I like to read erotica also.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
Ooh. Great question. I love all types of stories, so anything from sci-fy to romance can catch my eye. I like to read stories that have characters who resemble me. So stories with a strong, black, female lead will really get me interested. If there is a GLBT character, who' is written well, I'm usually interested in reading more. If I read the first page or so and can't put it down, then I know it's a keeper. Stories that I've not seen before, or that something familiar, but use them in different ways almost always can hold my interest.
I ask my friends who are avid readers to make recommendations and I go from there. I'm good for checking out blogs to see who's published something new or what people are talking about.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
Hmm. I've only ever used my ipad and my iphone. I usually use my iphone though.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
I'm so grateful for every moment that I have in life. I'm inspired by so many things. The beauty in nature, friends and family, women, wine. Being able to write stories and have readers read them.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
I think for me it's just the ability to create and express myself. That makes me feel the most joy.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I'm a creative person so I'm usually making something. I'm a crafter. So I knit, crochet, hot glue things to other things. I love to take my dog to the park, get outside and play around. I like small intimate get togethers with friends.
Describe your desk
My desk isn't very large. I have a cup of pens/pencils, a picture of my dog, an inspiration board on the wall above my desk with pictures, and quotes, and things that make me happy, and that's about it. It's near a window so I can stare out.
