Interview with Kathy-Lynn Cross

Published 2017-10-24.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Having a reader say, "This story spoke to me" or "Your writing touched my heart." Having the power to inspire. When I sit down to write that is what I aim for as my goal. And when my characters stir my emotions, I get excited and hope that they will have the same effect on the reader as well.
What are you working on next?
I'm super excited. I have a few WIPs right now. I'm going to be in a new anthology titled, Damsels of Distress by Vamptasy Publishing. It will release, this month on Oct 28th, 2017. My short story, Clipped Wings will be one of the stories featured in the anthology. I'm also working on an old novella, A Spirit's Last Gift. I had an extended version which I had to cut back because of word count, and I'm hoping to release the novella before the holidays. And the second book for the Unseen Series is due to release before the end of 2017. Look for, To Keep Death's Vow - Book Two The Unseen Series to be on Smashwords soon.
What do your fans mean to you?
They are my foundation, especially, my street team. They get me pumped when I'm feeling down and are a constant reminder as to why I love writing. Thank you all for supporting me. :)
Who are your favorite authors?
Oh my goodness, do I have to answer this? I have so many. How much time do we have? Well, a few mainstream authors, who have inspired me are, Kim Harrison, Karen Marie Moning, Stephenie Meyers, Sarah J. Maas, & Sue Grafton. Small press and Indie Authors, Julie Wetzel, Mercedes M. Yardley, Holly Kelly, Michelle Pickett, Tricia Copeland. EEK! I could keep going, but I think I'll run out of typing space. (lol)
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
My family. They have that power over me, and my feet hit the floor every day for them. I write for myself first, my family second, and my readers third, but if my work, in turn, inspires back, that's just a bonus in my book.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I love to bake. Cookies are my favorite, but I also make cakes and other pastries. I find the warmth of the kitchen soothing and my mind wanders while I'm waiting for the next finished creation. I also love to curl up with a soft blanket, a book, one of my kids, my husband, a cat or all three, the family dog by the couch and my coffee in arms reach. It's family time in the extreme. Just thinking about it makes me happy.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
Mostly from other authors and bloggers. Reviews and positive talk travel fast in the book universe.
What is your writing process?
I'm a Pantster. I have notebooks everywhere for when the voices start talking. I do an outline, but most of the time, it's a basic format. From A to B, but when I sit down, that is when I bypass B and go to D then G, and then back to C. But this style of writing works for me. I feel cornered when I have to follow or write in order. The characters in my head, they're the ones that are really telling their version of the story. I'm just the messenger.
What was the first book you read and how did it impact your life?
Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass by Lewis Carroll. They weren't my first reads, but these stories had an impact that expanded my creativity and soon defined my bemused way of writing. Making nonsense seem reasonable defines me as a storyweaver. (My made-up title for myself and others in the craft of storyweaving.)
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Yes. *(I'm cringing, but it was the start of something special.) The story unlocked something within me I never knew existed. It has never seen the light of day, but maybe someday, I'll revisit that world and turn it into something more.
