Interview with Karl Tutt

How do you discover the ebooks you read?
I am a voracious reader. Newspapers, magazines, novels, history. If it's on a page somewhere, I'll read it. I guess it's a matter of natural curiosity. I want to know not only what people think, but how they think. I suppose it drives me.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I spend a lot of time on my boat. I previously taught sailing and did charter work. It has been a large part of my life for a great many years.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
I started as a college student. I think I began with songs and poetry. Once in a while I will run across something I wrote years ago and marvel at how bad it is.
What is your writing process?
I keep a spiral notebook nearby at all times. I read something or hear something. It may be a random comment or a line from an article or story. I write it down. It hangs in my brain until it takes on it's own life. Once I have characters and situations, the story unfolds in a series of events that are dictated to me by chains that almost evolve on their own. Then I rewrite. Then I rewrite. Then I rewrite.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
Great writing has always impacted me. I suppose my first great influence was Edgar Allan Poe. I've always been fascinated by the unusual. My first efforts emulated him . . . very poorly, I might add. I also have an extensive list of writers, novels, and movies that have often changed my very being. The way I evaluate, the way I react, what makes me laugh, and what makes me cry. They are treasures to me.
How do you approach cover design?
I want a cover that gives the viewer a knockout punch right up front. I want it to tantalize, stir the emotions, and speak to the reader in a subliminal way. I want a reaction at the gut level, if I can get it. The cover must make the prospective reader want to turn the page.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
I love Poe's "The Fall of the House of Usher," although it is a short story. SOPHIE'S CHOICE by William Styon, TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD by Harper Lee, Kurt Vonnegut's SLAUGHTERHOUSE FIVE, and F. Scott Fitzgerald's THE GREAT GATSBY. Actually I could create several of these lists, but you asked for five books
What do you read for pleasure?
Damned near anything.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
Simple answer. I love the language and I love to write.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
It is most wonderful to have a platform that allows the aspiring writer to experiment, to create, and to have the satisfaction of seeing one's words and ideas in print.
Tell us about your latest book.
My latest is THE HOUSE AT HULL. It's another murder mystery, but the characters are all new and the setting is Boston. There's a bit of the supernatural, but that's a theme which constantly fascinates me. I think it's a throw-back to my love for horror movies. Dracula, Frankenstein's monster, and the Werewolf are all old friends.
