Interview with Kacie Ji

Published 2014-05-31.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Not sure if this is the first story I ever wrote, but it is the first real story I remember writing. It involved an alternate Earth and unicorns and portals that people had to use to travel between the two. Oh! And princesses that were named after gemstones!
What is your writing process?
I tend to be a pantser. I get an idea, usually an overall plot, first. Then figure out what characters would be interesting to see in that world. Once in a while I'll come up with characters first then the plot. So at any one time I can have dozens of plots and characters dancing around in my head that I mix and match into a story. Once I get them together I sit and write. I'll have plot points that I want to hit and will let the ideas come to me as I write. I've fallen into the self editing trap before so I have learned to just write the first draft quickly and not let myself get too bogged down with editing. Problems can be sorted out on the next round.
What do you read for pleasure?
I have the reputation for picking up and reading just about anything and everything. I do have a love for romances (I'm a published romance novelist as well) and post apocalyptic YA/NA. Anything original and fresh (this is the editor side of me) also makes me smile.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
My phone. It's a huge phablet so it's easy enough to load up with books and read on the go!
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in a small town way up north so winters were long and boring. It's actually why I started writing as a child.
When did you first start writing?
I started making up stories when I was three or four. I'm told that I have a vivid imagination and would make up stories involving my stuffed animals. Once I could write coherent sentences I was off and running!
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I spend a lot of time writing since I write independently and for a publisher. When I'm not writing, I'm editing for another publisher. And when I'm not doing anything related to publishing I'm usually found hanging out with my family, gaming, or taking photos.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
Word of mouth has gotten me a lot of books to read. I'm part of a book club which has introduced me to many new authors. Sometimes I'll be wandering through a bookstore and a cover will attract me or online and an ad will intrigue me.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
The escape. And to get the damn voices in my head to quiet down a little.
What do your fans mean to you?
Everything! Knowing that what I've written has made it out there and is being read/imagined/lived by someone else is a heady thing. Just getting a message from someone telling me that I've entertained them make all the work worth it.
What are you working on next?
So many stories! I'm working on the sequel to Demigoddess right now as well as a secret series that I'm having a great time writing. On the romance side I've got a story set in the 20s that I'm working on as well as a series of shorts.
