Interview with Kadee Nichols

Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in a small town in Ohio. You know one of those where everyone knows everyone. This influenced my writing because everyone there really thinks no one they know could be like the characters in my books. It was something I wondered about when I was a kid though. So I took it and ran with it.
When did you first start writing?
I started writing in High School. Mostly for homework but I was really surprised when a favorite teacher of mine told me I had potential to write professionally. It has been in the back of my mind since then and I just decided about a year ago to really get going and see what would happen.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
The greatest joy of writing to me is the fact that I get to be my characters as I write them. I really get to let go and let the outside (real) world just go away for a little bit.
What do your fans mean to you?
My fans are the world to me! Without them I have no career I have no success. My fans are great too. A great big thanks to my fans for all their support!
What are you working on next?
I am in the process of finishing my third book in my trilogy and starting the first book in my new series due out in April 2014.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
The first story I every wrote was really corny, it was for a sixth grade writing assignment. I wrote a short mystery very Scooby Doo like about a couple of young kids and a haunted house. My mother still has it in all my old school papers too. So I guess mystery was always my first love.
What is your writing process?
My writing process is a little strange to some people I just sit and write. Everything is free flowing. Sometime when I am stuck on something I will story board on poster board but for the most part I just write.
How do you approach cover design?
Cover design is tricky for me so I ask my friends and family what they think and go from there. I run it is publisher first and see what it looks like and then again ask for opinions.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
Five favey books Hummmm well here we go;
1. Island of the Blue Dolphins. Great book about abandonment and survival. It was one of the books I read in Jr. High School as a book assignment and just loved it. A great book for teenagers.
2. Death Be Not Proud. Another great book a young man is dying from brain cancer and this book tells all about his struggles and his acceptance of death. He helps his parents understand that he is ok with dying too. it is a sad book but great story at the same time.
3. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Yes it was a book first. It is a great way to remind you that sometimes you just have to act like a kid to get through.
4. Adventures of Sherlock Holmes. Because well it is Sherlock Holmes!
5. Moby Dick. It is a great tale of how greed and anger can consume a person to the point where it is the only thing they have in life.
What do you read for pleasure?
Of course every single chance I get! Books open a new world for me where I can be anyone and do anything. I can for a few moments become the character I am reading about.
