Interview with Kaleigh James

What's the story behind your latest book?
A snippet of a camping trip played in my mind, with two people insanely in love, but having a misunderstanding that is keeping them from realizing it. As I began to flesh out the idea, the story of Camden and Shane came to me. Twists that weren't in the daydream started fitting themselves into the story, developing the main and supporting characters and the storyline in a way I'd never imagined. The book description is below:

Camden grew up secretly in love with her brother's best friend, Shane. At her graduation party, she finally confesses her feelings, only to be completely rejected. Heartbroken, she leaves home, with no forwarding address. Three years later, she arrives at her family's annual camping weekend with a new guy in tow. Though shocked to see her, her family welcomes Camden and her guy with open arms. Shane, however, has had three years to miss her. He wants her back, but she has a major secret that could change everything. The thing is, she's not the only one hiding a secret.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I've always loved writing, and my computer has a dozen books on it with only the first few chapters. My husband always encouraged me to write, so I made completing a book my only new year's resolution for this year. I read like a fiend on my Nook, and I had purchased a book by HP Mallory on self-publishing. The idea appealed to me, since I didn't have capital to self-publish via paperback, and I don't seem to possess the patience to go the old-fashioned route. I believe in my books, so I figured, why not use Smashwords to publish independently?
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Watching the story unfold. It's like I have an idea in my mind and a general destination, but even I get surprised by twists in the story. Certain characters that were only intended as background fluff become part of prominent storylines. A surprise for the main character may be a surprise for me when I am writing the chapter and something unexpected happens. It's fun to watch everything develop into a full story.
What do your fans mean to you?
I've been writing via Wattpad for practice, and I've found that the fans keep me writing and developing my story. I have a background in performance theatre, and I've always admitted that I'm a feedback whore. I LOVE feedback, whether it is good or bad. The fans response to my books keep me wanting to update regularly and finish books for publication.
What are you working on next?
Nanowrimo is next month, and the story I am planning to write during November is called My Life v2.0. It's about Kylie, a recently divorced mother of two. Since her kids are with her ex for the summer, she decides to take a cross-country road trip. Her friend has a brother who is a working actor in Hollywood (I know, those are rare...lol), and the friend arranged for Kylie to crash with him. Patrick (the actor) is super busy with his new TV show, and he doesn't expect Kylie to be in the way, but things get complicated fast.

Hoping to publish this book by February 2014! :)
Who are your favorite authors?
Such a tough question! I'll read anything you put in my hands whether romance, crime novels, historical fiction, fantasy...it really doesn't matter. I love James Patterson, HP Mallory, Gena Showalter, Tess Gerritson, Kathy Reichs, Jennifer Armentrout, Abbi Glines, Colleen Hoover, etc. The list goes on!!!
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
My kids and husband. Although, maybe they should just be called my alarm clocks, not inspiration. LOL Really, though, my whole reason for doing all this is to spend time with them. I have the coolest kids in the world, and I'm totally spoiled by my husband. They make me want to be the best person I can be.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Reading, entertaining my kids, spending time watching or participating in theatre. I also currently spend the majority of my time working in corporate America. My goal is to be a full-time author in two years. :)
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
I usually just troll the best seller lists and under $2.99 lists on my Nook. (What can I say? I'm on a budget.) If something is out of my price range, I check to see if I can borrow it from my library. LOVE the overdrive app. I also search like crazy on that to see what ebooks my library offers. Lastly, if I really like an author, I'll pre-order their new books no matter what the price. My husband calls it my addiction. lol
What is your writing process?
I used to try to plan everything out ahead of time, but learned I got bored with my stories really quickly. Now, I kind of create a story skeleton. I plan beginning and end points and important stops along the way. Then, when I do a detailed outline of my desired plan, I usually work between points A and B. I've learned to be a lot more flexible, too. Sometimes, a part of the story I anticipate taking one chapter actually takes two; and the opposite has been known to happen, as well. And if I feel something unplanned really would help the story dynamic or something pre-planned will hurt it, I don't hesitate to add it or take it away.
What do you read for pleasure?
Any type of fiction. It varies based on my mood, but when I read for pleasure, I am reading for escape. Lately, I've been on a fantasy kick. I've been reading werewolf books, books about witches and warlocks, and books about angels or demons. I really enjoyed The Mortal Instruments series by Cassandra Clare, which coincidentally has all of the the above.
