Interview with Kali James

Published 2014-10-10.
When did you first start writing?
I began writing short stories at the age of ten.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
The greatest joy for me is the creation of something unique. I love the feeling I get when I finish a novel or short story and realize wow...I created that. I love when I can get lost in a world of my own making and just let the words flow. I don't use an outline. I let the story lead me where it wants to go.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
My children. My boys are the best. (I'm not biased at all lol) Each day they inspire me to be the best me I can be in their eyes. They motivate me to create. They support the process though they think mom is a bit strange when I'm at the computer talking to myself lol.
What is your writing process?
I write when the mood strikes. For example, with my next novel Cold Piece, I literally woke from a deep sleep at 2 am because an idea struck me like a lightening bolt. I rushed into my office and proceeded to write a four hundred page novel in thirty-two hours.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I lived in Oakland Ca until I was thirteen then we moved to Modesto Ca. The two environments are polar opposites so I think the contrast has made me a well rounded writer.
How do you approach cover design?
I'm lucky enough to work with a great up and coming graphic designer, Arkell Rogers.
What is your favorite book?
Wow. My absolute favorite book...I would have to say The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton. I love that book and its definitely standing the test of time. I do have to give an honorable mention to my second favorite book Beauty by Robin McKinley. It's the tale of Beauty and the Beast with a nice twist.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I wanted to be in control of my projects.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Cleaning lol. All male household...enough said.
What do you read for pleasure?
I love a good mystery and glass of wine.
