Interview with Karen Doherty

What are your five favorite books, and why?
I have so much more than five that I loved to have read. Nora Roberts and Beatrice Small have to be my all time favorite authors.
How do you approach cover design?
I think about the story and I want to give the right visual to bring someone's interest to a peak. Also I have a great cover person
(Covers by Design- Kellie Dennis).
What do you read for pleasure?
I cant read books while I write. I have a fear of taking someone else style.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I don't e-read. I love to have the paper in my hands. I guess I'm still old school.
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
Freebooksy has been one of the best sites that I have used so far. I'm still learning the ways of marketing.
Describe your desk
It is organized with both my PC and laptop taking reign over it all. My desktop paper calendar take up the rest of the room.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I have lived in the Niagara region all my life. It is a slower pace life and I think reading and writing poems brought me to the level of writing. I don't think it was influenced by where i live. It is inside my to write.
When did you first start writing?
I was fourteen when I started writing poems.
What's the story behind your latest book?
My last book is a series of seventeen books. I am still writing the series and so far I have had great reviews on it. It is going just as I planned so it is very exciting.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
My mentor W.J. May sat down in my hair styling chair and we started to talk. I was with two other publishers and it was not a good experience. When she offered to help me become a indie author I am glad today that I took her offer.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Im still new to smashwords and am learning how everything goes but so far I am looking forward to working with them for a long time.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
When people say they have read the book and loved it.
What do your fans mean to you?
Everything. They are one of the reason why I write.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
The alarm clock. LoL I am a early riser and love to take on the whole day. If I sleep past seven am then I feel I have missed part of the day.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I work as a hairstylist and love all my clients. Then I have my family, three children, husband and the two dogs. I enjoy the time I get with each.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
No I don't. I was the student that made teachers cringe. They would say "give me a two page essay". I, naturally would hand in a ten page essay with a title page, table of contents, and reference page along with the essay.
What is your writing process?
When I have a spare moment my fingers are tying away.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
Curious George
I read the first book and then finished the series that the school library carried in a week. I was hooked from then on.
