Interview with Karo Itoje

How did writing start for you?
I had a boring 8-5 job between 2007-2009. It was boring because there was very little for me to do. I had so much time where I was doing nothing. To avoid boredom in the office, I started to read a lot. I read anything that interested me. And at the end of each interesting read, I found myself making my own notes from what I've read. Sometimes even giving it a title. It was like if I had an interesting read; it gave me an article idea. Meanwhile I was already passionate about certain things in life. That was financial independence and self-respect.

And I enjoyed discussing relationship issues with friends. It was very clear to me how a love relationship should be, what is right and acceptable and what is not. I shared that with friends with strong conviction. I've had a few relationships then, relationships that thought me a few good lessons. I don't do regrets because I consider every event that happens to me in life, positive or negative, but especially negative, a lesson learned. So I often accept life lessons and move on. With this character it put me in a position where I could advice others. And in the area of relationship, I found myself giving friends helpful relationship advice.

When I started writing down notes, I wrote about financial independence, certain business success strategies and self-motivation.

By then I was into Network marketing part-time too. Network marketing business earning design was actually what opened my eyes to the benefits of passive incomes; the possibility of continually earning from a business with little to no further effort. It's like work today and earn from it for the rest of your life. I didn't know that was possible or even thought about it. But network marketing business model created that dream for me and after it did I became passionate about it and wanted to not just work towards it but encourage others to do the same. I really never knew how much I hated working for someone else until I discovered Network marketing.

My first ever published content was in a local Newspaper (Financial Standard Newspaper). That should be in early 2009. I approached the Newspaper house to be given a column to share my knowledge about network marketing. And I got it. So once every week they published my content about network marketing business and its success strategies.

But when my elder brother who was already into online content publishing became aware of my newspaper column, he advised that I bring my writing online. He said "today's newspaper is tomorrow's garbage. Take your writing online where you can reach a much bigger audience and your content can continue to be read". So I did.

When I lost my full time job without any warning in 2009 it reminded me of how unreliable the income from working for someone is. And the importance of pursuing an income I have control over. So I decided to become a full time online content publisher and create my own income doing what I love doing - writing practical targeted content that can help thousands.

I still love network marketing. And I still write about it; presently at mlmstarttosuccess.com

Ever since I started full time online content writing, I've written a lot on financial independence, Blogging, Self Improvement and Self-Motivation. My first published ebook was on attaining financial independence and the second was on Blogging. Although I later had to withdraw the two books to be updated and re-targeted.
What's the story behind your latest book?
Ever since my writing career, I've tried to stay away from writing relationship advice books; even relationship advice articles. And that's because often when I read such content they're full of speculations and game playing advice that I don't support.

But in early January 2013 I started the site nigerianweddingsguide.com. A site to provide wedding inspiration ideas and wedding planning advice for brides-to-be. But many singles that are still in a relationship use the site too. And they wanted my help. So I started to welcome relationship help questions. I felt satisfied doing that because they gave me details of the exact problem they’re having in their relationships and I offered advice based on their unique relationship situations; which made it much more helpful than a one fit all advice that you find in most relationship articles.

And doing that the idea for "The Journey To Finding Mr. Right" ebook was born. I was a young girl many years ago. I grew to become a young lady. Now I'm a woman. I've changed over the years especially in character and it's a result of the lessons I learned from my love relationships over the years, that of others around me and life itself.

At least 85% of us single women want a successful relationship and successful marriage. And I had 23 lessons that are based mostly on my personal love relationships and life experiences that can help these ones to achieve exactly what they want.

In The Journey To Finding Mr. Right I shared with you 23 lessons I have learned in my journey to finding Mr. right that is invaluable to having a healthy relationship, choosing the right man for a husband and having a successful marriage. All stages of single ladies; yes even the ones engaged and planning a wedding will find the ebook helpful.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I believe every writer's goal is for his/her content to be read by as many people as possible that will find the content helpful. Becoming an indie author helps to achieve that goal. It gets my name out and attracts a newer audience to me. And for an author like me that relies on my writing to earn a living, it has the added benefit of making me more money for the time and effort I put in.
Why did you choose Smashwords for the publishing and distribution of your work?
For the possibility it offers me to distribute my ebook to a much bigger audience.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
The opportunity that it gives me to pen down my opinions and experiences and someone, somewhere, across the world will read it and actually get helped by it.
What do your fans mean to you?
Everything! Without them my content means nothing. And my time and effort will be wasted. That's why my happiest working from home day is any day I get an honest 'Thank you for this page/book' email(s).
What are you working on next?
I'm working on a new title to be released in the near future. And its content is something I am very passionate about. It's titled:

"I Love You But I Love Me First"

It will be a great self-help book for men and women. So look out for it!
Who are your favorite authors?
I'm not into favorites. I don't even have a favorite color! :)

I discover a good author every once in a while. And whenever I do he/she becomes my favorite author.
In my line of field I admire authors who talk the talk and walk the walk. In other words, authors who write practical content not generic.

Authors who don't shy away from saying I was wrong when they were. I make mistakes too. And I'm imperfect.

Authors, who really care about helping their target readers. It doesn't matter what topic they write on.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
Like I said I don't do favorites. The last book I read that was helpful to me is my favorite. And as at writing the last book I read was the Smashwords Style Guide. It was almost overwhelming but it was really helpful in getting my book published on Smashwords. So I appreciate all the information it contained.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
I often read ebooks on a per need to know basis. If I need information on something and I do a Google search and find a website that does a good job of providing it, and there's an ebook for free download or to buy that will further help me then I go for it.
What do you read for pleasure?
Romance novels. I read crime novels too. But especially romance novels. I'm sure there are a few great romance novel authors but I'm enjoyed some of Danielle Steel's novels.
How do you approach cover design?
I stick to what I know best - Writing. Designing isn't my thing (although sometimes I make an attempt and I surprised myself). So I give it to the pros. The cover design for "The Journey To Finding Mr. Right" was designed by a great woman on Fiverr.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
Wow, this is an interesting question. Sometimes it's not easy to get out of bed every morning I tell you. Especially when you feel you're doing so much (in any aspect of life) but getting little to nothing in return. Sometimes you feel what's the point of even trying? And that has happened to me a lot in different ways.

I've even had days I cried hard while lying on my bed. But I have this attitude that helps me get over anything that comes my way. And that is, it doesn't help anyone when you nag or complain about something or give up. There's no point crying over spilled milk. If it's done it's done. If it has happened, it has happened. Move on.

If you feel really bad, cry. Cry hard even. Let it all out. And then wipe your face and think of the next step/phase. One night I may cry hard to sleep but the next morning I will wake up thinking, “how do I change things?”

If I just can't think clearly yet, then I try to take my mind off whatever it is for a while by doing some things I enjoy and that get me lost to my worries. Watch a movie, read a novel or visit a good friend.
In a few words what gets me out of bed every morning is a strong Will power to achieve what I want. And that results from having a clear knowledge of self and a strong WHY I do what I do.

Here's a quote I agree with.

"Life is ticking away every second. The worst thing is spending your entire life drowning slowly and not being able to convince yourself that you're in full control, and that you can easily save yourself simply by standing up. This is your life, made up entirely of your choices, your actions, and your thoughts. Someday you will either decide to save yourself or remain unsaved forever."
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in Benin City, Nigeria. And in a way I think it has influenced my writing.

I’m from a country that has nothing much to offer its citizens who have many hopes and aspirations. But sadly many of its citizens are still trusting in the system to make all their dreams come true.

And there are the women who sell themselves short because of their gender. They don’t realize their capabilities and potentials. And the need to stand up for themselves. They have allowed themselves to be limited my traditions; what the society expects of them. And they forget what's most important is what they expect of themselves.

So growing up and living in this kind of environment I think has made me become a self trained motivator.

However at least 70% of my content in general cut across ethnicity. The issues I often write about are something everyone, regardless of where they live can benefit from. And that includes my current book The Journey To Finding Mr. Right.

The Journey To Finding Mr. Right ebook is written for single women only. And every woman regardless of we live have the same relationship concerns, are dealing with same issues and want the same thing - to find the right man for us that will love us and treat us right and to have a healthy successful relationship that leads to a successful marriage. And my ebook helps greatly in this regard.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
When I'm not writing I'm thinking of the next best business growth idea. But when I'm not working, I'm watching TV, chatting or sleeping.
Describe your desk
I do have a desk where I do all my writing but it's very simple. It's a small desk, with a laptop, an Internet modem, some note books (I have a note book for every content website I have) and a writing pen to write down ideas.
