Interview with Katarina Claire England Ross

Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
Growing up in rural Ontario, Canada provided excellent fodder for the imagination. My parents both instilled a love of reading in my from a young age and a passion for discovery alongside it. The presence of nature in my early years established a respect and appreciation for the wild world beyond modern human reality. As such, preservation of and awareness of nature is a fundamental theme in my writing.
What's the story behind your latest book?
My latest books (the Rules Trilogy) is an exploration of the control that we have over physical and spiritual reality. Fundamentally, it attempts to address whether humanity is capable of transcending the basic tenants for survival that enabled us to get this far but may now hinder us from further development.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Getting to explore other worlds and characters. The subject matter of my stories often involves topics that interest me - the environment, human purpose, the tension between personal fulfillment versus improving the wider reality. Writing gives me a way to interact with these topics in a way that's (hopefully) both entertaining and enlightening.
Describe your desk
Anywhere the mood strikes. For the past year it's mostly been a wing-back chair in a living room with three cats, a computer or book and pen in my lap.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
The ability to have control over the entire creative process. Although it's been quite a bit of work, I've really enjoyed learning about the different steps of the process and experimenting to find what strategies are most effective. There are so many options for reaching out to readers, as well as the style one's storytelling can take in the 21st century, that I love having the option to explore whatever strikes my fancy.
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
Thus far, running a Goodreads Giveaway has provided me with the most exposure. I have also experimented with a Giveaway through Amazon but, being a Canadian author, the currency difference combined with the fact that they don't ship to winners in Canada makes it far less desirable than Goodreads.
What do your fans mean to you?
It's impossible to accurately describe how important the people who support your creativity are. As an author, I hope that people derive enjoyment from my stories. At the very least, I hope that the narratives I share spark thought and maybe even insight.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
Curiousity. I love to see what each new day holds.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Reading, watching video game Let's Plays (as well as movie/game reviews) and spending time with my partner, friends, family and cats. I also love to take walks.
Who are your favorite authors?
Philip Pullman, Tamora Pierce and many others.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
It hasn't yet, but I'm hoping for wider visibility than I got through Kindle.
