Interview with Kate Amedeo

When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I love going on long walks with the dog and the cat (yes, the cat comes with us). When it rains, and in Cornwall it rains every day, I like to curl up in my favourite armchair with a good book and a cup of tea.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
I started reading when I was three. My mom told me I started talking really early and at 9 months I was reciting poems for children in Russian by Korney Chukovsky. The first story I read was a Russian folk tale, I remember having a big book filled with magical tales about Baba Yaga, Ivanushka the Fool and all kinds of magical creatures. But the first book that had a real impact on me and made me fall in love with Victorian England was Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes. My father had the complete Sherlock Holmes collection and I read each book (the whole series was divided into‚Äč three tomes) multiple times.
How do you approach cover design?
I love creating covers for my own pieces. The first thing I do is find a picture that represents the story and then study other book covers to get inspiration for the design.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
The Road by Cormac McCarthy
Quo Vadis by Henryk Sienkiewicz
Planet of the Apes by Pierre Boulle
Nineteen Eighty-Four by George Orwell
The Year of the Flood by Margaret Atwood
A Song of Ice and Fire series by George R.R. Martin

I love to read. I read everything I can get my hands on. When I choose the next book to read it all depends on the mood, but my all-time favorites are sci-fi and horror. I also love post-apocalyptic and dark stories, especially the ones with realistic bad endings.
Describe your desk
Messy... Every time I try to bring some order into the chaos which surrounds my whole working area, it somehow gets back to it's 'normal state' as soon as I sit down to write (and I write every day!).
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in Latvia in a Russian family. I had a very happy childhood for which I am very thankful to my parents. When I was attending the third year at the university, I moved to Italy where I learned Italian and continued to study Chinese. Knowing these languages opened up a whole new literary world to me, allowing to read works of brilliant authors in their original language. I guess, it has influenced me in different ways, bringing some unusual word combinations and ideas into my own writing.
When did you first start writing?
I started writing five years ago. I read Metro 2033 by Dmitry Glukhovsky and it hit me - I want to write my own stories! My husband had started to write a dystopian novel before he'd met me but soon gave up on it. He showed me the draft and I got all excited about writing myself. He is still very supportive of my writing (even though he hates horror stories).
