Interview with Kate Trinity

Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
The first story I remember hearing was A Dragon for Danny Dennis, my mum read it to me before bed. I don't remember the first story I read myself though.
The story that I think had the most influence on me was Smokey the Cow Pony. I wanted to work with horses when I left school and I did. Doing breakers like in the story. I hadn't had horses when I was growing up so it was kind of a big thing for me to choose that kind of job over going to college.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
My five favourite books would be in first place Domain by James Herbert, this is the one book that totally freaked me out and scared the pants off me. Smokey the Cow Pony because I love the way it's written.
In third place would be Dr Faustus again because of the way it's written and for the comedy element.
Fourth would be Alibaba and the Forty Thieves because the copy I have is so old and the pictures are magnificent works of art that I would love to replicate in one of my own books.
Lastly I would choose any book by Andy McNab because he has been there and done that and his stories come from, in part, his own truth.
What do you read for pleasure?
I love Andy McNab, Terry Pratchett and Phillipa Gregory but at the moment I'm immersed in the Immortal Instruments series.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I have a Kobo which I love, it has a touch screen and the back reminds me of a duvet cover from Sindy's bed.
Describe your desk
My desk is currently a repurposed 1960's small dining table with a blue white and grey circle pattern on the top. It holds all of my PC stuff as well as coffee mug, notebook and Sims games. I have a gorgeous black desk which is currently in pieces waiting for me to decorate the office and build it.
When did you first start writing?
From being very young I used to spend weekends with my Grandparents and my Grandad wrote poetry and children's stories. If I wasn't reading whilst I was there I was writing poetry and stories. I wrote an entire novella western before I was 16 and I still have it in a folder waiting for the day I decide to show the world.
What's the story behind your latest book?
The book I am currently writing was inspired by H.H. Holmes Murder Hotel, a true story, and 1950's horror. I like the idea of adding a bit of glamour to the blood and gore.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I can't help but write, if I ever have spare time or even in my lunch hours at work, I will pull out pen and paper and start scribbling things down.
There was an interview that I read about an author who had been trying for years to get published the traditional way and had no look. One day she decided to try self publishing, thinking she had nothing to lose, and it turned out she was successful. It was an inspiring story.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Smashwords makes publishing easy, the explanations and guidelines are easy to follow. Without Smashwords I don't think I would have published to so many different distributors.
I also love the way that Smashwords are always moving forwards and involving the authors, keeping everyone up to date and motivated.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
If I'm not writing I'm reading or watching movies. Although this seems like a pastime it is more than that, okay I love reading and movies, but it's also an education. It shows you how others have crafted stories and good and bad ways to keep the reader?viewer entertained and engaged.
What is your writing process?
I usually start with the bare bones of an idea fermenting in my brain. I never write it down immediately and instead let it build. I work out the way it should go from beginning to end before I ever put pen to paper or fingers to keys. Then I start to write (no notes) with the first sentence until the last.
When I have the first draft I put it away for a week and go do something unrelated to writing.
Then the editing begins and I may edit over and over for a month or two before allowing anyone to read it.
Then I edit again to take into account the mistakes that they have picked up on before putting it away again.
A week later I read it again and make any final changes before publishing.
