Interview with Kathie Bondar

Published 2013-08-22.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
Fate had it, that I lived a nomadic life. Born in Budapest, Hungary in 1937 I lived there til the summer of 1945. Due to famine conditions in the capital, needy children were placed in foster homes in the country. This way I lived in three different homes in three villages. Back in Budapest in 1949, I was again on the road in 1956, as a consequence of the uprising.
Went to Oslo, Norway for a few years, then to Calgary, Canada in 1961. My book "Voices from the parallel universe" starts with an autobiographical section.
When did you first start writing?
I was, I think about 12 years old when I began to write poetry. My brother who was three years older with an obsession to draw, found my poem I have just finished, said it was too good for me, I must have stolen it. I never wrote poetry again. I could not not write, though, and began writing essays, careful to hide them from my big bully of a brother who had academic difficulties at school but was an excellent visual artist.
