Interview with Kathie Rivera

What do you read for pleasure?
I love to read works of fiction. I read sci to, fantasy, romance and some classical works.
When did you first start writing?
I began to write short stories when I was like seven or eight years old. My mother was a secretary at the time, and she had a typewriter when I was a kid and I loved the punching sound of the keyboard. That's how it all began for me. Then when I was like ten I wrote in notebooks. I have always enjoyed writing. I stopped writing during my adolescent years and then I started to write again after my daughter was born.
What are you working on next?
Honestly, I can't say, because I'm always changing, growing and coming up with fresh new ideas. I can tell you though, that I will continue to work on my Magicka book and try to create a trilogy if it's possible, but I'm always on the go, the lightbulb is always turned on, so it's difficult for me to say.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Yeah. It was in Spanish. I was eight and it was about two girls that died and went to heaven. One of the girls was the "good girl" and the other was the "bad girl". In the story the good girl fights with the devil because he wanted to take Gods crown away. In the end she returns it to God who takes it gladly. It was a one page story and I was really small, so it's not that complicated. I still have it somewhere, but I don't remember the title.
What is your writing process?
Freewriting, rewriting and research. I don't know if it could be considered a process, but that's what I do. Oh and revision at the end.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
I can't remember the first story because my mom loved telling stories when I was very small. She used to read to me and my brother fairy tales and bible stories or tell us stories that she made up. I remember Stone Soup and Mama do you love me, but the very first one, I really don't know, but I do remember my first novel though. It was written by R.L. Stine. Who's been sleeping on my Grave? It was about a teacher that turned out to be a ghost. After that I was a sucker for R.L. Stine books. I read much of the Fear Street series and Goosebumps. After reading that novel I never stopped reading since.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
Just five? Okay. I really loved the Harry Potter Series, Mary Called Magdalene, the Historian, The Picture of Dorian Grey, War of the Worlds, The Historian, Twilight, must I go on? I've enjoyed books that I can't even remember their titles anymore, but that touched my heart and helped me when I needed them the most. I hope one day my stories help others as well.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
My mobile phone.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I have always enjoyed writing and I knew that as an indie author I would have the chance to share my stories into the world. I'm a very shy person and very introverted. I don't think a publisher will ever accept my works, so I thought that Indie was the best way to go.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
I enjoy losing myself in the process. I feel that it takes a lot of the stress out of me and that I can express myself freely, like a therapy. When I write I feel like I'm somewhere else, creating something good and something enjoyable. The greatest thing for me is to finish my first draft, it's like, wow, I'm done, I'm really done.
Who are your favorite authors?
I don't know. J.K. Rowling, Dan Brown, Tolkien, Stephanie Meyer, P.C. Cast, I don't know. I don't think that I have a favorite per-se. I just like reading good stories and stories that entertain me, so I don't know.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I'm a housewife, so I do chores around the house, read books and watch T.V. Sometimes I go to the mall maybe, it's all pretty dull. There's no mountain climbing or throwing myself off an airplane on a parachute or any of those things. I cook, clean and play with my daughter.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
Well, I read them from smashwords of course, or on Wattpad. I know you're not supposed to judge a book by it's cover, but in this modern age we're very visual people, at least I'm visual and if the cover or the blurb appeals to me I will read. I'm right now reading Aegus, a story written by a smashwords author and I'm really enjoying the book.
What do your fans mean to you?
They mean the world to me. They are the ones who support my stories, they're the ones I write for, they're the ones who motivate me to continue writing. I love to receive comments and reviews that let me know that my story helped them relieve the tension of their daily lives. It's very touching.
