Interview with Kathy Stutzman

How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Smashwords and the thorough guides published on Smashwords gave me the confidence to make it happen. And, to make it happen rather quickly. Once my draft morphed into a book ready to go, all I had to do was lock myself into my office for the time it took me to read through the process, follow the instructions and hit the upload key. Even though I typically do not like to follow instructions, I found the instructions on how to publish your book to be very insightful and intuitive - and I was hooked. Knowing that I can publish a book anytime it rolls out of my brain onto the page is really exciting. I can't wait to get my next book uploaded and published - thanks Smashwords.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
One of the greatest joys of writing is to have written. I love the way I feel when I know I am ready to publish, when the words have ceased and the story is ready to be shared. Everyone has a story and it would be such a shame to leave this world with our stories left untold.
What are you working on next?
I have a list of books I am working on right now. When I write I percolate the concepts, outline the ideas and then let the words flow, and then when the words stop, I percolate some more. Sometimes (like right now) I have several stories and books going on in my head all at the same time and I have to write to get them out of my head - otherwise they start to take over every waking moment and I can't function. So right now I am working on a book for nonprofits, on lessons learned in Nicaragua, a cookbook and a book on collaboration. i would really like to clear my desk so that I can start writing about my experiences in Ghana and tell the story about a car camping trip my family took - the title of that is "Two Teenagers and a Toddler Discover America". The second series of Boost Your Confidence is also in the works. And then finally, i have a children's book that is just screaming to be written and many stories, so many words...
Who are your favorite authors?
I am a "take me away" kind of reader and love Tolkien and Rowling, Grisham and Cornwell, Follett and Hart. I really enjoy following characters and just diving into a new adventure...and my secret pleasures come from Meyer and many books and great authors.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
You really need to read some of my books to understand the answer to that question.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I am an avid long distance bicyclist and love to travel and cook (which I also write about). i also spend a great deal of time working as a facilitator and have just completed a documentary for Public Television. I love making connections and creating connections between people and their dreams and I believe that anything is possible and love helping people discover that within themselves.
