Interview with Kat Matthews

What motivated you to become an indie author?
I've always written some story or another since I was a kid. Romance didn't come to me until my mother introduced me to a vampire romance and then I was hooked. I couldn't get enough of the paranormal romances. Then the ideas started to fill my mind and the characters were screaming in my head to put them on paper. Now its an on going thing.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
They allowed me to publish my first book and I hope I will see much more success in the future.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Bringing the characters to life in the books and to bring everyone a fun and entertaining story. It is such a joy to sit back and look at your book and think...there, now everyone can read about the character that was gnawing at the bit to get its story written. I hope I can take the reader and immerse them into a different world for a little while for a bit of an adventure and fantasy.
What do your fans mean to you?
Everything of course! They make it all worth while. Getting the story out there to everyone is the best part and taking them on a journey of fun, excitement and romance is a big goal of mine. Everyone needs to get away for a little while and indulge. I hope I can do that for them.
What are you working on next?
I'm working on the other books in the series of Guardians of the Amphylon. I am currently working on Joachim's story which is the second book in the series. His brooding character is pushing me to get his story out there. So I'm in a crunch! These warriors are slave drivers!
Who are your favorite authors?
So many. Christine Feehan, Sherrylin Kenyon, Lyndsay Sands, Janet Chapman, Kerrelyn Sparks, S.E. Smith, Eve Langlais, Nina Bangs...there are so many!
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
My kids, the start of a new day means new ideas. God blesses us when we wake up and are able to get out of bed each day.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Reading, hanging out with my kids and husband.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
Mostly through the main retailers. Smashwords of course and then Amazon, Barnes and Nobles.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Yes, it was a sci-fi and I was a kid and the mother ship landed in my back yard at the bottom of our hill and we found a strange object in our broken down barn and we set off to find out what that object was all about and entered the mother ship. However, I don't think I ever finished that story.
What is your writing process?
Well, the idea comes out of nowhere and then I begin to write, once I start, the characters take over and it just...flows. Sometimes I'm even shocked at what I wrote down on the pages. There will be times that I go back and read it and think...Did i write that? The characters just take over and I become so enmeshed in their minds that the stories just write themselves in a sense.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
Has to be Christine Feehans The Guardian. I read that story and was like...whoah. This. is. awesome. It really was a wake up for me with romance in general. i was so used to historical romances that always bored me when I was younger. So when I finally read The Guardian, I was like a sponge ready for the next paranormal romance...and the next.
How do you approach cover design?
I create my own cover design. I just have a bit of an image in my mind and then all the different pieces fall together. Kind of like the story. I relate what they may look like, or a piece of their essence will show on the cover, just a piece though as if it is a sneek peek.
