Interview with Dr. Kat Smith

What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
I love my life. I think its always better to start the day off in a positive and grateful mood. There was a time when I was responsible for the care of my husband's parents and it slowed me down a bit, but I realized that I was doing it because I love him and we were able to make it through and provide loving care in the process. We are blessed to live in this country and relish in all that we enjoy, so I am inspired by life itself.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I am super organized and love to make lists. I have a routine and I stick to it for the most part. I like to plan out with posts I will write, videos I will record and the time I will work on my latest book. I am dedicated and when I am not with a client, I am working on one project or another. I love this quote from C Rearie - When passion and skill come together you create a masterpiece."
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
When talking with others on a plane or reading a magazine, I discover all sorts of interesting things to read. They say when the student is ready the teacher will come and I leave myself open to receive all sorts of information. We never know where our inspiration will come.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Well, maybe not the first, but I am proud of my first published article that defended the celebration of Black History Month when it was questioned why it was a holiday. It was published in our high school paper and it created the inspiration for my written expression.
What is your writing process?
When I teach a workshop on writing, I suggest that potential authors dump their brain by writing down 20 things that you want your story to be known for or important things about your nonfiction book and flesh them out. Those 20 things can eventually become your chapters. This is my process. Sometimes in the editing process a few are combined or deleted, but I get a true sense of what moves the work along. As I focus on each of the 20 small sections, it seems less daunting to write an entire book.
How do you approach cover design?
People are inspired to pick up a book for various reasons and images can be very inspiring. So my process of cover art comes from seduction marketing and story intrigue. Catch their eyes with an image then draw them in with your words.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
Here are three:
Beloved by Toni Morrison because I loved the intertwined stories of Setha, Beloved and Denver
Conversations with God - Neale C=Donald Walsh gave me a new perspective on prayer and receiving/interpreting answers
Kirkland Revels - Victoria Holt gave me a strength and confidence as a young girl.
What do you read for pleasure?
My topic of choice centers around self improvement and metaphysical studies. I am still a work in progress.
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
Speaking has been by far the most successful for me. My topic of focus is quite a niche, although most everyone is or have been in an intimate relationship. I have been able to branch out into more general topics for women which have been embraced warmly.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I am a native of New Orleans. We had a strong catholic community, although we were baptist. My grandmother was very present and stern, but I knew she loved me deeply. She taught me at a young age to respect nature and be generous with animals. I am one of 12 children so there was a spareness of time and attention, but we all made do with what we had. I write about my growing pains in my novel Seeds from Mama's Garden. Its based on my true life, unfortunately, but that story made me who I am today.
What's the story behind your latest book?
ABCs of Intimacy is helping people understand the difference between intimacy and sex and how to lay a solid foundation for their romantic relationships. Intimacy is trust, care, affection, respect and more. Sex is a component, but it lasts on average about 7 minutes. What do we do with the rest of our time to truly connect with our lovers?
Who are your favorite authors?
Malcolm Gladwell, Toni Morrison, Dr.Wayne Dyer

ABCs of Intimacy is the Who Moved My Cheese of Intimacy. Many confuse intimacy with sex, but it is so much more. It is the stuff that forms a solid foundation for relationships. If we consider a house as love, and intimacy as the foundation supporting that love, then we understand that if ingredients in that foundation are missing, it can crack. If the foundation fails, so does the love.
