Interview with Kaylyn Gabbert

What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
I love making three-dimensional characters. I love learning more about my characters. Every time I learn something that I suspect a character would like I feel all warm on the inside. Like a feeling I'm making a real person.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
Being able to write and hang with my family every day helps me get out of bed.
Who are your favorite authors?
My favorite authors are James Patterson, Gena Showalter, and Sherilyn Kenyon.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
My first story was about a young girl wanting to hang out with her older brother. When her brother won't hang out with her she makes her own fun.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
The Maximum Ride series was my absolute favorite because I ended up keeping a lot of the character traits with me.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I like to watch TV and movies, read, and play video games when I'm not hanging out with friends and family.
What are you working on next?
I'm working on a few novels and a lot of different projects for school. My top priorities are Under the Lake, Fight for Equality, and Escaping Hell. My school likes to challenge me in a lot of different ways like writing scripts, audio scripts, and so much more.
How do you approach cover design?
On my first book, I told my friend that I wanted the protagonist and antagonist standing on the cover side by side with shadows of the other main characters behind it. One of my friends was able to draw that exact idea. Authorhouse professionalized the drawing, and that's what we went with. I had no idea for the cover of my second book. I had told my fiance what it was about, and he drew what came to his mind. I picked out the background's color scheme.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up moving quite a bit. It influenced my writing by showing me how different people can be with their physical, mental, and emotional characteristics. It showed me different societies, landscapes, and set-ups of towns/cities and more. I love the suburbs the most, but knowing that I can make small towns and cities realistic.
What's the story behind your latest book?
Under the Lake has always been a story about a girl finding a world under the lake by her house. But when I was working on the idea as a teenager it was about a girl wanting to disappear. Now it's about trying to plant your roots and make a living no matter what.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I wanted my work to be seen by my family and friends no matter where I was. I wanted them to have access to my writing when I had it done.
