Interview with LaKecia Rodriguez

What do you read for pleasure?
I like to read authors such as Stephen King, Dean Koonz, and Wes Craven. I also like the James Patterson novels.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I like to read on my mobile phone more than on Kindle.
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
So far marketing by offering free e-books and ACX.
Describe your desk
My desk is cluttered, yet I can place my hands on everything I need to write. There are two laptops on it with a printer on the top. I mostly write from my living room sofa or kitchen.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in a small town in Northwest Indiana. Everyone there was close knit. I was influenced to write by my teachers all throughout school, but was afraid to publish what I was thinking.
When did you first start writing?
I first started writing poetry in my 20's. From there I went to writing science fiction.
What's the story behind your latest book?
The story behind my latest books are things that happen in everyday life with a twisted spin that I place on them. Whether it's cheating gone wrong, or revenge the character that gets to inflict it has issues of their own.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I was encouraged by another writer on Facebook to try and publish as an Indie author. Before that my works just sat on my desk.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Smashwords and other sites that promote indie writers are a godsend! It allows the writer to have control of their works without all the rejection from sending manuscripts to bigger book companies.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
The fact that I reached a goal by publishing what I had written years ago. If someone takes the time to read and give criticism I take that and learn from it. I'm riding the wave of all the ideas that my mind has and writing them all down.
What do your fans mean to you?
Everything!! I like it when they tell me what they think about my characters and writing style. I know that everyone won't like how I write, and that's fine. That's what makes us different.
What are you working on next?
I'm currently working on a children's book series that will be available on Kindle, and two more books, one about a personal experience, and the other fiction.
Who are your favorite authors?
Wow! I like Stephen King, James Patterson, Dean Koontz, mostly authors that deal with fiction.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
My inspiration is knowing that it's a new day and that I'll find an idea to put in a book or finish one.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
when I'm not writing I'm working. traveling or enjoying my grandchildren.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
I stumble over them. I read some on Goodreads. They have to appeal to me otherwise I won't read them.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
The first story I wrote I have yet to publish.
What is your writing process?
My process begins with what I want to write about--what idea I want to give the reader. From there I develop the characters and their personalities. The rest is storyline.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
I read "The Raven" from Edgar Allen Poe. Despite its length it was pretty good. It made better sense when it was acted out.
How do you approach cover design?
I try to find a cover that appeals to me and what the book is about.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
I have no favorite books. I like to read what interests me. On my bookshelf you'd find a variety of subjects from science to science fiction.
